Competitive vendor landscape

The global market for polyethylene packaging is highly fragmented in nature owing to the presence of several small vendors. Vendors compete on the basis of price, quality, innovation, reputation, distribution, and promotion. The intensifying competition in the market space is expected to prompt vendors to reduce prices of their products, which could have a negative impact on margins and market growth. The current market scenario comprises of companies of various sizes, some more specialized than others with respect to commodities. A few vendors in the global polyethylene packaging market also have larger financial resources than others which enable them to invest more in R&D and growth avenues.

“The emergence of biodegradable plastics is reshaping the global polyethylene packaging market. Biodegradable plastics are easily decomposed by microorganisms and have a lower level of toxic effect on the environment as opposed to conventional plastics. They are made from petrochemicals with biodegradable additives. With the rise in stringent environmental compliance regulations across the globe, many vendors are expected to switch to biodegradable plastics to avoid paying hefty penalties,” says Sharan Raj M, a lead analyst at Technavio for packaging.
