Technavio’s market research analysts estimate the global packaged GaN LED market, to grow at a CAGR of 5% between 2016 and 2020. LEDs have become quite popular when it comes to wall-plug efficiency and lighting. LED-based lighting is replacing fluorescent, incandescent, and sodium bulbs and mercury in most applications. APAC leads the global market for GaN LEDs, occupying around 76% of the overall market share. The major reason of this region’s growth is the presence of low-cost LED product manufacturers in China. Moreover, the general lighting segment is the major revenue contributor in the region due to high demand for applications in railways, harbors, airports, and other rails and subways.

The new market research report from Technavio provides a breakdown and analysis of the packaged GaN LED segments by technology.

“One of the latest developments in the LED market is the shift towards GaN-on-Si (GaN-on-silicon) technology. GaN-on-Si LED manufacturers are leveraging the silicon wafer market to achieve economies of scale through volume production. Moreover, silicon wafers are abundantly available and cheaper than sapphire. These LEDs will be tough competition for sapphire-based LEDs, as they are the most promising substitutes to sapphires in terms of cost benefits,” says Asif Ghani, Lead Analyst, Hardware & Semiconductor, Technavio Research

The general lighting segment is the largest revenue-contributing segment in the packaged GaN LED market, accounting for 44% of the total market share. Much of this segment’s growth comes from the high demand for energy-efficient lamps for installation applications in airports, harbors, railways, and other rails and subways. Residential lighting plays a very crucial role in this segment’s market contribution, as the demand for artistically designed lights is growing significantly.
