LCR meter: Key market research findings

  • APAC dominates the market geographically
  • Increasing popularity of smart tweezers
  • Key vendors – Applent, B&K Precision, Chroma, Doble Lemke, Extech, GW Instek, HIOKI EE, IET Labs, Keysight Technologies, MECO Instruments, National Instruments, Newtons4th, Rohde & Schwarz, Scientific Mes-Technik, Siborg Systems, Stanford Research Systems, Tecpel, and Yokogawa

In terms of unit shipments, Technavio’s market research analysts predict the global market for LCR meters to grow at a CAGR of around 6% between 2016 and 2020. The recent rise in exports across the globe is triggering an upsurge in the demand for LCR meters. The need for mid and low-end products like LCR meters, oscilloscopes, and multimeters is sustained largely due to increased demand from the education sector, polytechnic institutes, and training laboratories in APAC. During 2015, the global LCR meter market was dominated by APAC with a high market share of more than 68%. The presence of many consumer electronics manufacturers in the region coupled with the strong demand for semiconductors from countries such as Japan, China, South Korea, India, and Taiwan will propel the growth of the LCR meter market in APAC during the forecast period.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the LCR meter segments based on the type.

“At present, smart tweezers are gaining traction in the market as they are a type of handheld digital LCR meters, which are light in weight and easy to use. It is a set of tweezers that consists of a powerful LCR-meter and a small display, which allows the user to test components and circuits by just connecting the components. Smart tweezers can automatically determine the best test range, type of component, and signal and test for inductance, resistance, and capacitance, along with secondary values such as ESR,” says Sunil Kumar Singh, Lead Analyst, Hardware & Semiconductor, Technavio Research.

By 2020, the benchtop segment will account for around 85% of the overall market share to continue its dominance over the global LCR meter market. Benchtop LCR meters offer more features than handheld LCR meters. These features include programmable frequencies, better measurement accuracy up to 0.01%, data collection for automated applications, and a computer control. Benchtop LCR meters are used for AC calibration of inductance, capacitance and resistance standards, production testing of components and sensors, and dielectric constant measurements with a variety of dielectric cells.

The key vendors in the market include Applent, B&K Precision, Chroma, Doble Lemke, Extech, GW Instek, HIOKI EE, IET Labs, Keysight Technologies, MECO Instruments, National Instruments, Newtons4th, Rohde & Schwarz, Scientific Mes-Technik, Siborg Systems, Stanford Research Systems, Tecpel, and Yokogawa. The competition is high among benchtop LCR meters when compared with the handheld LCR meters, as the majority of renowned vendors focus more on benchtop LCR meters. This is because they perform other functions than measuring inductance, capacitance, and resistance. Handheld LCR meters are cheaper than benchtop and are easier to manufacture when compared with benchtop meters. As a result, the availability of handheld LCR meters is high when compared to benchtop LCR meters.
