The top three revenue contributing product segments are discussed below:

Roast and ground coffee packaging market in the US

The global roasted and ground coffee packaging market was valued at almost 2 billion tons in 2015 and will grow at a CAGR of around 4% by 2020. The packaging materials used for roasted and ground coffee have high barrier protection like flexible stand-up pouches. The manufacturers are using stand-up pouches with gas valves to prevent coffee from being oxidized as they have valves to release the carbon dioxide that is produced by the ground coffee. Roasted and ground coffee can lose around 40% of its aroma within eight hours of exposure or when in contact with air.

Freshly roasted coffee beans are highly susceptible to oxidation, and they lose aroma when they come in contact with oxygen. The level of exposition of these coffee products determines their shelf life as even a small amount of fluctuation in the air will have a considerable impact on the content. Coffee manufacturers prefer high barrier packaging such as stand-up pouches with gas valves to package freshly roasted and ground coffee,” says Sharan Raj, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on the packaging.

Instant coffee packaging market in the US

The global instant coffee packaging market was valued at more than 1 billion tons in 2015 and will grow at a CAGR of almost 2% by 2020. Instant coffee is broken into granules, and these are prone to humidity and not oxidation. It contains hygroscopic particles that absorb moisture from the air, and this requires packaging that prevents that. These products are packaged in low humidity conditions in vacuum-packed resealable bags, and theses bags are moisture-proof packages that keep the product dry. Vendors use bags with high barrier properties that protect the product and enable an extended shelf life of 12 months.

Premium coffee packaging market in the US

The global premium coffee packaging market in the US was valued at more than 1 billion tons in 2015 and will grow at a CAGR of around 2% by 2020. Premium coffee products are made of green bean coffee and roasted black coffee beans. Specialty coffee beans are packaged in vacuum-sealed bags or valve bag pouches and consists of micro-roasted coffee beans. These special pouches or bags are designed to release carbon dioxide emissions so that it can retain its quality for the entire duration of use. Rich aroma and taste make these products premium and different from other items.
