Light sensors: Key market research findings

  • Need to reduce power consumption in mobile devices fuels market growth
  • Consumer electronics account for a majority of the market’s revenue
  • Key vendors – ams, Avago, ELAN Microelectronics, Everlight Electronics, Heptagon, Maxim Integrated, ROHM, Sharp, Sitronix, and Vishay Intertechnology

Technavio’s market research analysts predict the global market for light sensors to grow at a CAGR of more than 8% between 2016 and 2020. The growth of this market is driven by the need to reduce power consumption in mobile devices. The growing need for power savings has led manufacturers to embed light sensors in these devices. Light sensors control the brightness of the screen depending on the ambient light and reduce the power consumed by these devices.  During 2015, APAC accounted around 54% of the overall market share to become the dominant shareholder in the global light sensor market. The high concentration of mobile device manufacturers, with some leading mobile manufacturing brands based in countries like China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and India, will have a positive impact on the growth of the light sensor market in APAC during the forecast period.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the light sensors segments based on the application.

“Sensor fusion is currently gaining a lot of traction in the light sensors market. Sensor fusion is the combining of data from different sensors and arriving at a conclusion that generally cannot be obtained through the use of a single sensor. This propels demand for MEMS integration, leading to the further growth of the light sensor market.  Some of its benefits include efficiency, better performance, and reduced power consumption,” says Sunil Kumar Singh, Lead Analyst, Hardware & Semiconductor, Technavio Research.

The consumer electronics segment dominated the global light sensors market in 2015 by accounting for over 84% of the overall market share. Advancements in the field of sensing technology have enabled the adoption of light sensors in consumer electronics. These sensors can be integrated with other components and can work in close association with each other to achieve optimized results. For instance, an ambient light sensor (ALS) and a proximity sensor are integrated in a single chip, which is embedded in smartphones to control the backlighting of the screen. This is done by detecting the proximity of the user to the phone. The technology is currently being used in mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, phablets, and notebooks and is expected to grow in tandem the mobile computing device market.

The key vendors in the global light sensors market include ams, Avago, ELAN Microelectronics, Everlight Electronics, Heptagon, Maxim Integrated, ROHM, Sharp, Sitronix, and Vishay Intertechnology. The market is characterized by an intense competition due to the presence of a large number of vendors trying to gain market share and high price pressure. As light sensors are low cost, vendors compete to offer the lowest price in the market. The market also has well-diversified regional and local vendors.
