CMOS camera module: Key market research findings

  • APAC dominates the market geographically
  • Consumer electronics account for a majority of the market’s revenue
  • Key vendors – Cowell, LG Innotek, LiteON, SEMCO, and Sunny Opticals

Technavio’s market research analysts predict the global CMOS camera modules market to grow at a CAGR of around 18% between 2016 and 2020. The growth of this market is fueled by the increasing implementation of dual camera technology in smartphones. Leading smartphone vendors like Apple and Samsung provide dual cameras in their phones to produce high-quality images with better color description. Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus as well as Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are capable of competing with digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. During 2015, the global CMOS camera module market was dominated by the APAC region with a market share of more than 65%. The concentration of camera module vendors in this region will augment the growth of the CMOS camera module market by 2020.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the CMOS camera module segments based on the application.

“The number of electronic packages using the flip-chip technology has increased rapidly. With the ongoing expansion of the internet, mobile phones, PDAs, desktop computers and laptops, digital camcorders, digital cameras, and other consumer electronics, the flip-chip revolution is gaining wide traction in the market. The technology offers faster signal and better high-frequency characteristics. It also provides increased number of I/Os, along with the concentration of more signal and power connections in a smaller area,” says Ishmeet Kaur, Lead Analyst, ICT, Technavio Research.

Currently, the consumer electronics segment accounts for around 81% of the overall market revenue to dominate the CMOS camera module market in terms of revenue generation. The growth of this market segment can be accredited to the large customer base for consumer electronic products such as smartphones, tablets, PC, digital cameras, gaming consoles, and TVs, which use CMOS camera module. Low-cost CMOS sensors are replacing CCD sensors that were initially used in consumer electronics like medium format cameras.

The key vendors in the global CMOS camera module market include Cowell, LG Innotek, LiteON, SEMCO, and Sunny Opticals. During the forecast period, the market in the automotive sector will register immense growth. Thus, the vendors with offerings in the automotive sector are expected to gain an edge over others during the forecast period. Despite consumers’ inclination towards the adoption of high-resolution cameras, many vendors are still producing 5MP or less resolution CMOS camera modules. These vendors are likely to be affected by changing consumer preferences during the forecast period. Innovation will be the key to success in this market, as many buyers of CMOS camera module such as Apple and Google are striving hard to introduce new products with best available CMOS camera modules.
