Industrial control system (ICS): Key market research findings

  • Shift towards multifactor authentication drives market growth
  • DCS segment accounts for a majority of the market’s revenue
  • Key vendors – IBM, McAfee, and Symantec

Technavio’s market research analysts predict the industrial control system market in North America to grow at a CAGR of around 6% between 2016 and 2020. The growth of this market is fueled by the ongoing shift towards multifactor authentication. Multifactor authentication is a verification technique that uses two or more different authentication methods to prevent unauthorized access to computing devices, databases, or physical locations. Multifactor authentication solutions incorporate biometrics, PINs, and phone-based authentication solutions, making them one of the most secure authentication systems available in the market.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the industrial control system segments based on the product.

“Deception technology is emerging as an advanced cyber security to enhance the network and data protection of an organization. According to our analysts, deception solutions will have higher adoption in enterprises owing to the enhanced level of security that they bring about. The use of deceit is being widely adopted in enterprises to prevent black-hole malware botnets, threat actors, and suspicious connections. In some cases, federal investigators have used deception techniques to intercept and disrupt command-and-control communications during botnet takedowns,” says Amrita Choudhury, Lead Analyst, ICT, Technavio Research.

By 2020, the DCS segment will continue its market dominance by accounting for around 43% of the overall market share. DCSs are integrated with ICS systems to control and supervise industrial architecture. A DCS consists of a control architecture that offers a higher level of control over multiple integrated sub-systems that are responsible for managing the details of a localized process. In a DCS, the process is controlled by deploying feedback or feedforward control loops, where key process conditions are automatically maintained by the operations controller.

The key vendors in the industrial control system market in North America include IBM, McAfee, and Symantec. Factors such as intense competition, advances in technology, and frequent changes in end-user preferences constitute significant risks for vendors in the market. The rivalry in the market will become intense with an increase in solution extensions, technological innovations, and M&A. Vendors with better financial and technical resources can develop advanced products that can render competitors’ products non-competitive and obsolete even before they are launched or before R&D and commercialization costs have been recovered. To remain competitive, vendors have to develop new technologies and also stay updated with the emerging technologies that can affect their product lines.
