This market study outlines the growth prospects and market forecast for micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) until 2019. The research report details market shares and segmentations by projector systems, microbolometers, and other optical MEMS. The report also provides market shares for APAC, Americas, and APAC. The leading vendors analyzed by this report include Analog Devices, Freescale, STMicroelectronics, and Texas Instruments.

Technavio’s market research analysts estimate the global optical MEMS market to grow at a CAGR of more than 7% between 2015 and 2019. Growing trend towards miniaturization of electronics devices and ICs, has led to increased adoption of optical MEMS in devices. Also, rising demand in consumer electronics, thermal sensors, and automotive applications has surged the growth of optical MEMS market. APAC is expected to dominate the global optical MEMS market because of its strong manufacturing infrastructure. India is likely to create demand for optical MEMS switches and optical MEMS sensors on account of projects such as digital India.

The new market research report from Technavio provides a breakdown and analysis of the optical MEMS segments by technology.

“The Internet of Things (IoT) is driving the demand for MEMS devices in smart homes, building automation, gaming, smartphones, automobiles, and healthcare. IoT helps in collecting data from these applications and transmits that to the cloud over the Internet. This creates the demand for optical cross-connects for wavelength management and wavelength selective switches for effective transmission. Also, the MEMS-based optical sensors have found applications in smart lighting. They determine the presence of nearby objects and adjust the brightness accordingly,” says Navin Rajendra, Lead Analyst, Hardware & Semiconductor, Technavio Research.

Projection systems are the largest contributors to the optical MEMS market, accounting for around 69% of the overall market revenue. These projection systems are used in heads-up displays (HUDs), interactive center consoles, and adaptive headlights in automobiles; pico projectors; mobile projection; and near-eye displays. They are also used in spectroscopy, 3D printing, and 3D machine vision. This segment is expected to generate revenue worth $1 billion during the forecast period, due to its increased usage in the automotive sector.

The leading vendors in the global optical MEMS market include Analog Devices, Freescale, STMicroelectronics, and Texas Instruments. The market is highly competitive due to technological innovations, product extensions, and mergers and acquisitions. The growth potential of this market is very high which has created large opportunities for new vendors entering the market.
