Technavio has released updated information on the electronic devices market, with the publication of its new market research report, global IEDs market. The global intelligent electronic devices (IEDS) market is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 5% between 2015 and 2019, owing to the rising demand for reducing transmission and power distribution (T&D) losses. The demand for IEDs from Americas is likely to increase with growing investments for modernization of smart grids, substations, and the installation of smart meters in every home by 2021.
“Of late, the market is witnessing increased installations of intelligent substations in power distribution. Besides optimizing operation efficiency, these IEDs are increasingly being used to monitor and control the electricity distribution. Substations with IEDs protect heavy equipment such as transformers and the people who work in and around it by raising the alarm in case of any risk of overload, overvoltage, and short-circuiting. IEDs such as digital protective relays, load tap controllers, PLC and smart meters are most suitable for controlling and monitoring substations,” says Navin Rajendra, Lead Analyst, Industrial Automation, Technavio Research.
Automated substation systems include IEDs and feeder-switching equipment, such as circuit breakers, reclosers, and FDIRs, which help power utilities monitor, measure, and control power-related activities automatically. IEDs facilitate the operators to shut down the substation or a power plant remotely in case of heavy turbulence and overloading situations, averting big damages. These IEDs can restore power in less than 300 milliseconds by clearing any faults in the distribution line and re-establishing power from the other sources and thus helps decrease the frequency of power outage.
The leading vendors in the global intelligent electronic devices market include ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens. This market is highly correlated to the substation automation market. The IED market is witnessing the entry of new players with more innovative and cheaper products than the established players. Intense competition prevails in the market where big players are acquiring smaller players to reduce competition and increase their product portfolio.
