Discrete capacitors: Key market research findings

  • APAC dominates the market geographically
  • Ceramic capacitors account for a majority of the market’s revenue
  • Key vendors – Bihl+Wiedemann, Baumer, Ifm Electronic, Peperl+Fuchs, StoneL, and Siemens

Technavio’s market research analysts predict the global discrete capacitors market to grow at a CAGR of around 5% between 2016 and 2020. The growth of this market can be accredited to the rising adoption of high-end consumer electronics gadgets. The proliferation of smartphones and tablets is prompting capacitor manufacturers to develop high-performance capacitors that comply with the requirements of smartphones and tablet manufacturers. During 2015, the global discrete capacitor market was dominated by the APAC region, which accounted for a market share of more than 75%. The high quantity of raw materials coupled with the low establishment and labor costs will fuel further growth of the discrete capacitor market in APAC during the forecast period.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the discrete capacitor segments based on the type.

“There is a growing need to improve capacitor performance and provide more reliable products. FLEXITERM from AVX Corp. was created as an additional flexible termination layer added to the component. This extra feature safeguards electrical integrity while external forces are applied. FLEXITERM is used in combination with base metal electrode (BME) technology. This provides the advantage of eliminating the issues such as high material cost associated with PdAg capacitor technology and makes it possible to provide increased reliability performance,” says Sunil Kumar Singh, Lead Analyst, Hardware & Semiconductor, Technavio Research.

In 2015, the ceramic capacitors segment accounted for more than 54% of the overall market revenue to become the key revenue generating vertical of the global market. Ceramic capacitors are electro-static in nature and find application in power electronics. Ceramic capacitors include MLC axial, single layered discs, MLCC, MLC radial, and exotic configurations such as MLC arrays, doorknob capacitors, and low inductance LICA chips. Furthermore, they are comparatively cheaper to manufacture as opposed to other types of capacitors.

The key vendors in the global discrete capacitor market include Bihl+Wiedemann, Baumer, Ifm Electronic, Peperl+Fuchs, StoneL, and Siemens. The competitive environment in this market will intensify during the forecast period with the increase in product extensions in terms of size and technological innovations. Infineon Technologies is permanently enrolled under European and Romanian funding products for its R&D activities. Similarly, other vendors are also aggressively scouting for potential investors. Most of the market leaders such as Murata are headquartered in APAC, and their operations and plants are located in the US, Europe, and Asia to optimize their operational costs. Companies that are actively present in this market are developing ultra-capacitors customized to different end-user segments. APAC has the most price-sensitive buyers when compared to buyers in North America that consider innovation and the performance benefits of such products to be the prime factors influencing buying decisions.
