Automotive Pressure Sensors – Market Trends and Forecast

Renewable energy

The global automotive pressure sensors market was valued at USD 2 billion in 2016 and is expected to surpass USD 3 billion by 2021, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on the global automotive pressure sensors market, under its automotive electronics portfolio. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends and offers an analysis of key vendors like Bosch, Continental, Denso, Infineon Technologies, and Sensata Technologies.

According to Siddarth Jaiswal, a lead analyst for automotive electronics research at Technavio, “Rising focus on passenger and environmental safety have resulted in an increased demand for automotive pressure sensors. Some of the safety systems that use pressure sensors include passenger and pedestrian airbags, anti-lock braking system, electronic stability control, traction control system, and tire-pressure monitoring system.”

TPMS is used to notify the driver if the pressure in the tires is optimum as low inflated tires may result in tire burst and loss of control of the vehicle. Besides safety concerns, properly inflated tires will result in better fuel efficiency and good grip on the road. Moreover, the Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has mandated installation of TPMS in all vehicles weighing less than 10,000 pounds.

Shifting focus of OEMs toward autonomous vehicles to influence pressure sensors market

Major vendors in the market are working to expand the autonomous driving concept. Such campaigns and promotions have broadened the market acceptance of semi-autonomous features in a passenger vehicle. Technavio expects the shift towards self-driving or unmanned vehicles will upsurge the uptake of safety systems such as airbags.

Growing popularity of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and nano-electromechanical systems (NEMS)-based technology

MEMS technology comprises the development of mechanical and electromechanical components using microfabrication technique. The automotive industry has been using MEMS technology in piezoelectric, piezoresistive, and capacitive pressure sensors. MEMS sensors account for more than 80% of all the pressure sensors used in automotive industry. The next generation of automobiles is poised to reap the benefits of NEMS technology.
