This new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.
Adoption of new learning methods
The adoption of innovative learning approaches has increased in the ASEAN, over the past decade. Some schools in Indonesia and the Philippines have adopted an e-learning platform known as Quipper School, which enables students to attend online classes, source study materials, and take online quizzes. These e-learning platforms will have a positive influence on the adoption of mobile-learning and education apps. The emphasis on providing learning content with rich multimedia has led many instructors to incorporate active learning methods that include inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, and experiential learning to enhance the learning experience of students and their performance assessments.
Several innovations in education have led the teachers to reinforce learning through methods such as demonstrations, AVs, group discussions, and games and simulations, to help students retain information effectively. Furthermore, schools are also expected to adopt blended/ hybrid learning approaches such as flipped classrooms that combine online and traditional learning. International schools will mainly drive such adoptions in the region.
Emergence of K-12 international schools
The rise in disposable incomes is enabling many parents to opt for international schools, as the curricula offered in these schools provide international exposure to children, which helps them prepare better for their higher education in overseas universities. Considering the growth opportunity in Southeast Asia, various international chains have started growing their operations to countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
About 70% of the schools in Southeast Asia offer an international curriculum and most of the schools follow British curriculum. With the increase in the number of overseas players in the market, education technology will grow leading to the emergence of schools that offer a variety of curricula.
Rise in adoption of BYOD programs
Schools in the ASEAN region are progressively using gadgets, leading to the application of BYOD initiatives in such institutions. BYOD initiative is mostly implemented in the private education sector which is a pioneer in the adoption of new methods of education delivery. With the BYOD policy, students can explore various ways of digitization for improved learning. For instance, students can explore e-textbooks and understand how to navigate e-textbooks at their convenience. BYOD also offers interactivity that will enable students to access education apps and learning platforms that will endorse collaborative learning and engagement. These developments will eventually result in the adoption of various education technology solutions. To implement BYOD programs, schools are upgrading their network infrastructures such as Wi-Fi lines, as well as anti-virus and other security solutions. In institutions where BYOD is applied, over 50% of students use their personal devices to finish their academic tasks. The gaining traction of the mobile education market in the ASEAN will boost the implementation of BYOD in K-12 school, leading to the growth of educational hardware and software vendors in the ASEAN, as they will find more avenues for profits.
Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are BenQ, Eduspec Holdings Berhad, Ellucian, HP, Intel, Macmillan Learning, McGraw-Hill Education, Microsoft, Oracle, Pearson Education, Promethean Limited, and Saba Software.
