Key vendors are marketing their global navigation satellite system (GNSS) chipsets on the basis of connected cars, which will witness a significant growth during the forecast period

Technavio, a company that develops over 2000 pieces of research every year and covers more than 500 technologies across 80 countries, has announced the top five leading vendors for the global GNSS market in their latest research report.

To identify the top vendors, Technavio’s market research analysts have taken into account location-based service (LBS), a major segment in the market in terms of revenue.

This Technavio report, under embedded systems vertical, is based on the synthesis, analysis, and interpretation of information about the global GNSS market collected from specialized sources. The analysts have derived insights using a mix of primary and secondary research with an aim to provide a holistic picture of the market.

Competitive vendor landscape

The global GNSS market has several vendors competing at different levels. Among these vendors, Qualcomm is the leading GNSS chipset vendor, followed by Broadcom, MediaTek, and u-blox. The two segments in the global GNSS market are location-based service and road segment, in terms of revenue. It is expected that road segment will witness immense growth during the forecast period. The emerging trend in the market is the miniaturization of GNSS-enabled devices, which has propelled vendors to provide highly efficient and small form factor GNSS chipsets. Among various vendors, SkyTraq is one such vendor that is marketing its new GNSS chipset, Venus828F, on the basis of small size. Apart from this, vendors are also focusing on the provision of efficient GNSS chipsets that do not emit radio frequency noise, making the GNSS satellites popular.

One of the major trends that will gain traction in the market is the growing popularity of smart cities. The governments across the globe are making huge investments on the development of smart cities. The concept of smart cities is easily supported by GNSS as it can be easily implemented for smart mobility and has LBS applications. GNSS can actively provide information, irrespective of the environment. It also offers autonomous driving solutions and helps in travel optimization and automatic transactions,” says Sunil Kumar Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio for report on embedded systems.

Top five vendors in the global GNSS market space

Qualcomm

Qualcomm is one of the leading vendors of the global GNSS market. The major factor that helped Qualcomm get a strong foothold in the market in 2015 was IZat, which can be deployed in cellular handsets. Also, most of the smartphone vendors use Qualcomm’s processors. The IZat Location Platform employs a combination of signals from various location sources, which include GNSS and sensors. The hardware level mixing is done to obtain accurate location information, fast time-to-first-fix, improved robustness and continuous transition for both outdoor and indoor environments, and lower power consumption. In June 2016, Qualcomm announced that it will support Galileo satellite, in addition to GPS, BeiDou, GLONASS, QZSS, and SBAS. Recently, Qualcomm has announced the launch of processors for connected cars.

Broadcom

Broadcom is one of the leading vendors for GNSS chipsets and concentrates on innovating its products from time to time. In 2015, Broadcom announced the launch of two products that include BCM 4771 GNSS SoC designed for wearables and concurrent tri-band BCM 47531 IC with a unique feature of sensor hub and always-on capabilities. Besides these, it also announced a new GNSS chip exclusively for IoT and wearable devices.  The advanced chip permits devices such as fitness bands to provide accurate location with low power consumption and it can also eliminate the need for a separate microcontroller (MCU). The Broadcom BCM47748 helps in system power savings as it eliminates a bulk of the signal processing from the device microcontroller unit (MCU) by calculating velocity, position, and time on-chip, which again helps in system power savings. The chip uses intelligent firmware to save battery life and maintains precision in terms of distance, speed, and position for an improved user experience. This new GNSS chip are mostly preferred in the automotive industry as it can withstand temperature up to 105 C.

MediaTek

MediaTek is one of the emerging key vendors in the global GNSS market. Owing to the high adoption of its products in the Chinese smartphone vendors market and comprising PNDs/recreational and cameras, it is expected that MediaTek will extend its presence in other markets during the forecast period. The latest feature developed by MediaTek is GNSS low power which reduces power consumption of their GNSS chips in tracking mode. With the high increase in the number of wearable devices as well as the new compact battery-driven IoT products, MediaTek has specifically designed GNSS.

SkyTraq

SkyTraq offers products such as GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, QZSS, and SBAS. It develops high performance chipset and module solutions for the consumer satellite navigation market. SkyTraq introduced Venus828F, which tracks up to 28 satellites at a time and is capable of working with multiple satellite systems. This receiver, which requires an external antenna and a power supply to determine accurate position, time, and velocity information, was specifically designed for wearable and IoT applications. It also facilitates fast time to market and easy to use.

Intel

In 2016, Intel showcased a number of new IoT products at the embedded world a trade fair in Nuremberg, Germany. To create many module solutions based on Intel Atom x3 processor, Intel has teamed up with Telit, a provider of M2M technology. The Telit modules have combined application processing and GNSS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular capabilities and is expected to be available in the market by the end of 2016.
