COB LED: Key market research findings

  • Development of LED filament bulbs
  • Miniaturization of electronic devices

Technavio has released a new market research report on the global COB LED market, which is expected to generate revenues worth $9 billion by 2016 and 2020. The declining average selling price (ASP) of LEDs has been a major driving factor of the demand for COB LEDs in the global lighting industry. APAC dominates the global COB LED market, accounting for 52.28% of the overall market share. The majority of LED manufacturers, including Nichia, Samsung LED, LG, Seoul Semiconductors, and Toyoda Gosei, are based in APAC, and this accounts for the high demand for LED packaging equipment in this region.

The new industry research report from Technavio discusses in detail the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

“LED manufacturers have come up with LED filament bulbs, which eliminate the use of heat sinks, and result in a lighter-weight lamp and high power at low cost. LED filament bulbs involve assembly of low-power LED chips directly onto a transparent substrate made of glass or sapphire materials. Also, LED filament lamps are ideal replacements for incandescent lamps because of their high luminous efficiency, classic incandescent lamp design, omnidirectional light, and low-cost outputs,” says Asif Ghani, Lead Analyst, Hardware & Semiconductor, Technavio Research.

COB LED technology directly attaches the LED chips in the form of arrays onto the substrates, thereby offering higher packing density compared to other traditional surface mount technologies. In addition, the process of direct attachment of LED chip results in reduced pitch. This reduction in pitch is lowering the overall height of the light source. The absence of ceramic substrate, phosphor, and lens for each LED chip also helps in miniaturizing the size of the LED. The higher packing density enhances the output of LEDs in terms of intensity and uniformity.

The leading vendors in the global COB LED market are Citizen Electronics, Cree, Nichia, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, Philips Lumileds Lighting, Samsung Electronics, and Seoul Semiconductor. This market is highly fragmented, with numerous global, regional and local vendors. Companies with a strong foothold in the general lighting segment are the well-established vendors in the COB LED market. Competition in the market is expected to intensify during eth forecast period, owing to increase in product and service extensions, innovations in technology, and M&A.
