Motion-Controlled Remote: Key market research findings

  • Integration of smart TV manufacturers and motion technology providers
  • Growing adoption of RF technology in remote controls

Technavio has released a new market research report on the global motion-controlled remote market, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 9% between 2016 and 2020. Increase in the sales of smart TVs and high penetration of direct-to-home (DTH) connections worldwide are major factors driving the demand for motion-controlled remotes. APAC dominates the global market for motion-controlled remote, accounting for around 44% of the overall market share. One of the major reasons for the dominance of APAC is the higher unit shipments of smart TVs in the region. Also, the region is home to the top five global smart TV manufacturers.

The new industry research report from Technavio discusses in detail the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

“Of late, the smart TVs manufacturers are collaborating with motion technology providers to integrate motion control software in smart TVs. They are also manufacturing remotes compatible with their smart TVs so that the users can navigate browsers in a convenient way. Also, the vendors are implementing various technologies including include RF, ZigBee RF4CE, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi, in their remote controls that enable users to access a wide variety of digital content in a simpler and efficient way,” says Navin Rajendra, Industry Manager, Hardware & Semiconductor, Technavio Research.

The market is expected to witness more adoption of RF-based remotes by the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), observing the demand for advanced TVs such as 3D smart TVs, and 4K ultra-high definition smart TVs. The RF technology enables natural user interface into their remotes. RF-based motion-controlled remotes offer bidirectional communications and high-precision motion control, and have a low manufacturing cost.

The leading vendors in the global motion-controlled remote market include Hillcrest Labs, LG, Nintendo, Samsung, and SMK. Though the market is still in the nascent stage because of high average selling price (ASP) and low consumer awareness, however, the proliferation of consumer electronic devices integrated with motion-sensing software will increase the growth prospects of the market. At present, the vendors are focusing on product development and innovation.
