This market research report includes a detailed segmentation of the global Micro-electro-mechanical Systems (MEMS) market for mobile devices by product type (accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers, microphones, oscillators, and pressure sensors) and by end-user (smartphones and tablets). It outlines the market shares for key regions such as the Americas, APAC, and EMEA. The key vendors analyzed in this report are Asahi Kasei Microdevices, Bosch Sensortec, InvenSense, and STMicroelectronics.

Technavio’s market research analysts estimate the global MEMS market for mobile devices, to grow at a CAGR of around 10% between 2016 and 2020. The constantly changing technology in the mobile device segment requires integration of MEMS to support new applications and features, as different kinds of MEMS provide different features to mobile devices. APAC is the largest revenue-contributing region in the global MEMS market for mobile devices, accounting for 66% of the overall market share. Factors such as the presence of a large number of mobile device manufacturers and the shifting of their production facilities from other regions to the Asian countries, propel the growth of this region.

The new market research report from Technavio provides a breakdown and analysis of the MEMS segments by technology.

“One of the latest trends in the semiconductor market is sensor fusion. The technology uses different sensors to acquire data that cannot be obtained using a single sensor. Sensor fusion improves the quality and noise level of computed data and leads to more efficient, higher-performance devices than standalone sensors. For instance, Android and iOS use multiple sensor applications in different operating systems, for augmented reality and context awareness,” says Asif Ghani, Lead Analyst, Hardware & Semiconductor, Technavio Research

The pressure sensor segment dominates this market, and it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9% during the forecast period due to the increasing application of GPS in mobile devices. Accelerometer and gyroscope can be used interchangeably and, these components together cover a large share of this market. The smallest segment is oscillators, which were introduced in mobile devices in 2013.

The leading players in the global MEMS market for mobile devices include Asahi Kasei Microdevices, Bosch Sensortec, InvenSense, and STMicroelectronics. Vendors in this market compete on the basis of price, quality, technology, and innovation. The high vendor competition has led to an increased number of mergers and acquisitions, wherein smaller entities are being acquired by or are being merged with, major players.
