The growing demand for high-resolution images of the seafloor is leading to developments in SONAR technology such as synthetic aperture SONAR (SAS). SAS uses advanced computing and signal processing power to create high-resolution images. SAS SONAR systems combine the successive pings along a known track to form an image with much higher resolution than conventional SONAR.
