The global motorcycle connected helmet market was valued at $3 million in 2015 and is expected to surpass $6 million by 2020, says Technavio.

Technavio’s automotive electronics portfolio has announced its latest market research report on motorcycle connected helmet for the forecast period, 2016-2020. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global motorcycle connected helmet market during the forecast period. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include BMW Motorrad, O’Neal Schuberth, and Sena Technologies.

In terms of geographical analysis, APAC will be the fastest-growing region in the global market, and is expected to reach revenues of over $6 billion by 2020. China, India, and Japan will emerge as the key revenue-generators in the region.

“Nowadays like many other devices, motorcycle helmets are also turning smart. Motorcycle helmets have been introduced with health and wellness features. The helmet is increasingly becoming the key to a wealth of information about the rider’s safety, comfort, and health in the motorcycle segment. This is inducing the vendors like LifeBEAM to develop smart helmets that have optical heartrate sensors. The change of the motorcycle helmet from a just safety device to holistic connection systems has not only increased the safety but also the comfort level,” says Siddarth Jaiswal, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on automotive electronics.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Rising fatalities in motorcycle crashes increase adoption of advanced helmets

As per Technavio, around thousands of people meet deadly accidents annually and the use of helmets will reduce the number of bike-related fatal accidents significantly. Moreover, the accidents can be reduced to one third with the systems like ABS, side-view assistance, and cruise control. One of the main reasons for high fatality conversion rates is the lack of protection among riders and vehicles. Most of the accidents occur due to the crashes, improper lane changing, etc. This increase in the fatalities leads to the requirement for safety in motorcycles, paving the way for helmet use as well as giving rise to advanced safety features through helmets. Helmets with advanced features such as a 180-degree rear view display vehicles on other lanes which gives the rider a fair idea. In addition, motorcycle connected helmets prevent the rider from being distracted due to external factors like smartphones, besides being able to detect vehicles in their blind spot. This shows that connected helmets not only offers a rider better riding comfort but also higher safety quotient. Technavio expects that the reduction in the number of accidents due to motorcycle connected helmets will increase their adoption during the forecast period.

Legislative action like mandatory helmet laws driving motorcycle helmet adoption

The safety feature of helmet is known by all, however, the legislation on the use of helmet with proper enforcement by the government authorities is increasing the use of motorcycle helmets globally. For instance, the European Union has enacted helmet laws for all individuals, which are quite strict across Europe. These effective legislations on helmets in Europe has increased the adoption of motorcycle connected helmets in the region, making it the significant contributor to the global motorcycle connected helmet market. On the other hand, with the liberal enforcement laws in the APAC region, the use of helmet is low in the region. However, several governments in the region are coming up with effective policies regarding helmet usage, which will increase the adoption of helmets in the region during the forecast period. For instance, India is looking to introduce digital payment of penalties on the non-use of helmets and assign more traffic police units to book those not wearing helmets. This will rationalize the use of helmets in the country, and will be a significant growth driver for the connected helmet market.

Distraction posed by smartphones while riding boosts demand for hands-free calling

The advent of smartphones has made life much easier however, they lead to a lot of distractions, irrespective of place and time. These distractions are riskier while driving a bike, where the focus is very important and even a slight disruption may lead to a fatal accident. The increased penetration of smartphones in various regions is one of the major factors contributing to such distractions. The rising rate of distractions caused by smartphones is propelling the need for devices that allow riders to call or receive calls without getting detracted while riding. Among various smart devices, Bluetooth is a device that connects smartphones to Bluetooth headsets fitted on the helmet, which enables the rider to experience hands-free calling. To ensure more safety, full-fledged connected helmet like Skully helmets use HUD to alert riders about an incoming call or message without distracting them. Many vendors in the motorcycle helmet market are developing these Bluetooth helmets due to the growing demand for safety on roads.  Such constant developments to equip smart features will further prevent motorcycle riders from being distracted due to smartphones.

Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are Intelligent Cranium Helmets, LifeBEAM, LiveMap, Nolan Communication System, Nuviz, and Reevu.
