Technavio’s market research analysts predict the infusion systems market in Japan to grow at a CAGR of around 7% between 2016 and 2020. The demand for infusion systems is augmented by the presence of favorable market conditions in the region. In Japan, various governmental and non-governmental organizations are focusing on preventive therapies and cost-containment strategies for long-term care. The country makes it mandatory for all individuals, both employed and unemployed, to participate in the National Health Insurance Program. The country has many acute care hospitals, which use infusion systems in large numbers, thus, contributing to market growth. Such factors are expected to prompt vendors to develop new products to sustain their market position.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the infusion systems segments based on the product.

“Of late, variants like power-driven and closed infusion systems are being made available in the market. Physicians are emphasizing on the use of power-driven and closed infusion systems for the delivery of medications, fluids, and nutrition liquids in patients due to the minimized risk of infections. In closed systems, the clinician assembles the individual components, such as the infusion pump, stabilization platform, extension set, and needle-less access site, and integrates them during the insertion,” says Barath Palada, Lead Analyst, Healthcare & Lifesciences, Technavio Research.

The general purpose and volumetric pumps segment is expected to dominate the infusion systems market in Japan during the forecast period. These systems employ a linear peristaltic pumping mechanism to deliver fluids into veins under pressure and are designed for specific uses. Volumetric pumps are also incorporated with an occlusion pressure detection system. These systems are used to accurately administer fluids, drugs, and blood products of up to 1,000 ml from a bottle or bag at a flow rate of 0.1-1,000 ml/hour.

The key vendors in the market include Baxter, JMS, Nipro, and Terumo. The infusion systems market in Japan is currently dominated by large vendors like Baxter and JMS. However, the analysts at Technavio have envisaged that the level of competition in this market will become intense by 2020 owing to the entry of numerous foreign players. Also, the initiatives taken by the government to reward innovative medical devices and accelerate the approval process for such devices has also provided new vendors the opportunity to enter this market. Consequently, it can be estimated that, by 2020 the regional players will account for a significant share of the total market.
