Global Titanium Dioxide Market: Increasing Use of Coated Titanium Dioxide to Drive Market Growth

Renewable energy

The global titanium dioxide market is currently valued at more than 6,375 metric tons and is expected to surpass 7,483 metric tons by 2021, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on the global titanium dioxide market, under its specialty chemicals portfolio. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends, and offers an analysis of key vendors like Chemours, CRISTAL, Huntsman International, KRONOS Worldwide, and Tronox.

According to Ajay Adikari, a lead analyst for specialty chemicals research at Technavio, “The rising concern regarding the depletion of the ozone layer has increased the demand for sunscreens. Titanium-based microparticles and nanoparticles are increasingly used to enhance the consistency and viscosity of sunscreen products. Hence, the rise in the demand for sunscreens will favor growth of the global market.”

Manufacturers of sunscreen products are currently shifting to the use of titanium dioxide nanomaterials. Nanomaterial-based products are easy to use, have better consistency, and provide superior UV-protection in comparison to microparticle-based products, and hence are used widely in the skincare industry.

Increase in penetration of doped and coated titanium dioxide nanomaterials

Titanium dioxide nanomaterials doped with nitrogen ions act as photocatalysts and generate free radicals by reacting with UV radiations. Free radicals can cause cell damage or skin allergy. To prevent the photocatalytic reaction while allowing them to retain their UV filter property, these nanomaterials are being coated with silica, dimethicone, or aluminum hydroxide. As a result, manufacturers of sun care products are increasingly using coated titanium dioxide nanomaterials in their products.

Emerging new application areas

Manufacture are making investments in R&D for developing new applications for titanium dioxide such as advanced water filters for use in desalination and wastewater treatment in an attempt to leverage its mechanical and photocatalytic properties. Furthermore, titanium dioxide is used as a photosensitizer in the photodynamic therapy for the cancer treatment. In the construction sector, the photocatalytic nature of these materials is being used to design advanced pollutant-degrading concrete pavement.
