Increase in penetration of doped and coated titanium dioxide nanomaterials
Titanium dioxide nanomaterials doped with nitrogen ions act as photocatalysts and generate free radicals by reacting with UV radiations. Free radicals can cause cell damage or skin allergy. To prevent the photocatalytic reaction while allowing them to retain their UV filter property, these nanomaterials are being coated with silica, dimethicone, or aluminum hydroxide. As a result, manufacturers of sun care products are increasingly using coated titanium dioxide nanomaterials in their products.
Emerging new application areas
Manufacture are making investments in R&D for developing new applications for titanium dioxide such as advanced water filters for use in desalination and wastewater treatment in an attempt to leverage its mechanical and photocatalytic properties. Furthermore, titanium dioxide is used as a photosensitizer in the photodynamic therapy for the cancer treatment. In the construction sector, the photocatalytic nature of these materials is being used to design advanced pollutant-degrading concrete pavement.
