Nanophotonic diodes
In 2015, nanophotonic diodes accounted for a maximum share of around 96% in the global nanophotonics market. Also, it is likely to be the fastest-growing segment in the market during the forecast period, registering a CAGR of around 49%. Much of the segment’s growth is due to the increasing adoption of nanophotonic materials in the development of LEDs, UV LEDs, and OLEDs.
“Several LED/OLED manufacturers in the market are adopting nanophotonic technology as they deliver high luminance efficiency, consume less power and involve low cost production. Moreover, nanophotonic materials enable manufacturers to develop ultrathin and flexible OLEDs for new display applications, which is not possible with the existing technologies,” says Chetan Mohan, a senior analyst at Technavio for research on semiconductor equipment.
The demand for OLEDs is high from consumer electronics segment, such as PCs, smartphones, and TVs. Technavio expects that increasing focus on the development and production of OLEDs by consumer electronics manufacturers will accelerate the demand for nanophotonic materials for the development of OLEDs.
Nanophotonic near-field optics
The increasing demand for advanced microscopes like near-field optical scanning microscopy (NSOM) is driving the demand for nanophotonic materials to develop NSOM probes and left hand material (LHM) slab lenses. NSOM probes are used to enhance the incoming light in the near-field, providing higher resolution. The currently available commercial near-field scanning optical microscopes merge the scanning force techniques of an atomic force microscope (AFM) with the optical detection capabilities of conventional optical microscopy. Increased global focus on R&D for applications in fields such as the materials science, life science, and semiconductor industries will increase the adoption of advanced devices such as NSOM.
Nanophotonic PV cells
Factors like the rising power crisis and increased need for cleaner resources of power have increased investments in renewable power generation. Power generation from cleaner resources, such as solar and wind energy, has gained traction due to growing environmental concerns about CO₂ and greenhouse gases. Moreover, the investments in the solar and wind energy are also increasing considerably. The declining installation costs of the solar power plant have led to the expansion of new markets that have increased the deployment of multiple solar PV systems. The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and the Solar Foundation are working on different projects to rationalize permissions and to reduce the local barriers to opt for solar energy. Governments in different regions have mandated a robust regulatory framework to facilitate increased growth of renewable power in different regions.
