Radiopaque laparotomy sponges

In 2015, radiopaque sponges occupied the maximum share of around 46% in the global laparotomy sponges market. They are also known as detectable X-ray laparotomy sponges and consists of a radiopaque marker that helps to detect the sponge using radiography. Radiopaque sponges are expensive but they are used in all thoracic and abdominal surgical procedures, particularly in healthcare organizations in North America. The American Medical Association and the AORN in the US recommend the use of radiopaque laparotomy sponges or radiofrequency sponges over traditional cotton gauze sponges to reduce the risk of sponge retention.

“Radiopaque sponges have gained popularity in the market due to the augmented need for the detection after surgery. These products have developed because of the increase in complications with the traditional laparotomy sponges, which has limited detectability features. These products are observing an enlarged adoption in emerging countries such as India, due to the growing awareness regarding the advantages of such systems,” says Barath Palada, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on orthopedics and medical devices.

Traditional laparotomy sponges

The traditional laparotomy sponges are cotton sponges made of extra-absorbent cellulose fibers and is available in sterile or non-sterile forms. It is not easy to track and requires manual counting during surgeries to avoid sponge retention. It finds applications mostly in developing economies of Africa and APAC as they are affordable and end-users are unaware about advanced laparotomy sponges such as RFID or radiopaque enabled sponges. Further, the market has become commoditized with the entry of many local and regional vendors, which has also triggered the competition among vendors.

RFID/barcode laparotomy sponge

The RFID/barcode laparotomy sponge contains a RFID chip or barcode that helps in validating during the manual counting process. This segment is expected to grow at a higher rate owing to the improved detectability associated with the use of those products. The developed economies such as the US and Europe are increasingly adopting these products to reduce the complications after the surgery. The surgeons can detect the retained sponges containing RFID chip and barcode within three seconds. The sponge helps in increasing the efficiency of the surgery by reducing the risks of sponge retention. RFID is a technology that works based on the electronic circuit or tag. The healthcare industry is becoming conscious of the several uses of RFID, especially to prevent manual error and promote efficiency in the tracking and monitoring of sponges.
