The top four revenue contributing function class segments are discussed below:
Global EP grease additives market
EP grease additives accounted for around 38% of the global grease additives market in 2015. When coming in contact, two metal surfaces generate heat and pressure that often wears out the grease film between them. In such cases, EP additives are used to reduce the friction between the interacting metal surfaces and prevent the subsequent wear and tear.
“The treat rate for EP additives in greases depends on the composition and the application. Various EP additives are used in greases including metal dithiocarbamates, sulfurized olefins, chlorinated paraffin, sulfurized esters, and other sulfur-phosphorous materials and few of these act as friction modifiers. Although a combination of these materials can be used, materials like sulfur-phosphorus combination are used on a standalone basis,” says Ajay Adhikari, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on additives, adhesives, and sealants.
When used in combination with specific soap-based thickeners, EP additives show better performance. However, there is a high requirement for higher treat rates when used in combination with other types of thickeners. For instance, sulfur-phosphorus stimulation levels are better with conventional lithium-based greases than when used with calcium and aluminum soap thickeners.
Global antiwear grease additives market
Antiwear grease additives accounted for around 22% of the global grease additives market in 2015. The treat rates for antiwear grease additives depends on the degree of inhibition required. Owing to the property of reducing friction between metal surfaces and prevent wear of the surfaces, the antiwear grease additives are in high demand. They chemically react with the surfaces to form a thin film between them, which has lower shear strength than the base surfaces, thereby reducing friction between the surfaces. Zinc dialkyl dithiocarbamate (ZDDP) and phosphate esters are commonly used as additives in greases to inhibit wear.
Global VII grease additives market
In 2015, VII grease additives accounted for around 22% of the global grease additives market. The treat rate for VII grease additives depends on their applications as well as their solubility and the compatibility of oil. These additives are polymer components that are added to lubricants to avert changes in thickness due to changes in temperature. These additives are found in automatic transmission fluids, multi-grade passenger motor oil, gear oil, heavy-duty motor oil (HDMO), hydraulic fluids, and grease. Moreover, VII grease additives are used to alter the water resistance, rate of thickness, wet adhesion, and dry adhesion and help in increasing the adhesion properties of greases, thereby reducing friction. VII grease additives are mainly olefin copolymers (OCPs), poly-isobutylene, and polymethacrylates. Their extremely effective performance has led to the growth in the consumption of OCPs and other functional polymers.
Global antioxidant grease additives market
In 2015, the antioxidant grease additives accounted for around 14% of the global grease additives market. Antioxidant grease additives are used in greases to lessen the rate of oxidation and impart corrosion protection to the lubricant. The oxidation of grease results in condensing of the base oil, which in turn, leads to the degradation of the oil and the formation of sludge, resins, and corrosive acids. Stalled phenols are primarily used as antioxidants for oxidation inhibition at temperatures ranging below 150ºC.
