The top three contributing material segments are discussed as below:
Silicones
In 2015, silicones accounted for around 34% share of the global electronic adhesive market and is expected to grow moderately during the forecast period. Silicone adhesives form dependable, long-lasting bonds to a variety of substrates, such as glass, ceramics, metals, and filled plastics, without the requirement for mechanical fastening and holding. Once cured, all silicone adhesives form strong, but flexible bonds that help reduce mechanical stress and vibration. Most silicone formulations are solventless, minimizing the requirement for handling or ventilation and special storage, and many are reworkable to permit easier module repair.
“Silicon adhesives perform consistently over an extensive range of operating temperatures and offer excellent dielectric insulation. They are applied for various purposes such as gasketing and sealing lids and housing grooves. They are also used for sealing wires and other openings in modules and affixing components such as coils and capacitors to circuit boards. These adhesives are also helpful shielding terminal electrodes and stabilizing or cushioning fragile electronic components,” says Chetan Mohan, a senior analyst at Technavio for research on semiconductor equipment.
Polyurethanes
Polyurethane materials are generally two-component liquid potting compounds with variable degrees of pot life, hardness, and viscosities for a broad range of electronic potting, electrical, solar potting, and encapsulating applications like strain-sensitive components, micro inverters, transformers, coils, and J-Box. There are various advantages of using polyurethane materials such as optical clarity, durability, elongation, high- or low-temperature serviceability, electrical insulation, rapid fixturing, and impact resistance. Polyurethane adhesives are applied in LEDs, alternative energy equipment, ignition coils, solar panels, electronic control modules, and many other devices. Other popular applications include moisture cure adhesives for panel bonding, chemical-resistant polyurethanes for pool and spa filters, high-quality epoxy resin adhesives and potting compounds for heavy-duty liquid filtration applications, and an epoxy resin encapsulating compounds for challenging submersible pump applications and solar panel encapsulation.
Acrylics
Acrylics is the fastest-growing segment in the global electronic adhesive market growing at a CAGR of around 26% during the forecast period. Acrylic adhesives are high-strength, high-performance liquid formulations that instantly stick to rubber, plastics, rigid glass, metals, low-porosity substrates, and even oily metals. Acrylic adhesives are considered ideal for electronics adhesion due to their ability to offer superior bond strength and ideally applied to several consumer electronic applications. Owing to high flexibility, they are gaining traction in high-volume, high-strength applications as well. Hard disk drive is one of the most common products in which acrylic tapes are widely used. Acrylic tapes account for temperature and damage resistance, noise reduction, and survival to vibrations. The increasing number of applications utilizing acrylics confirm the growing preference for acrylics to other materials in the global electronic adhesive market.
