E-nose: Key market research findings

  • Increasing application of e-noses in the F&B industry drives market growth
  • Majority of the market’s revenue is generated by the environment monitoring segment
  • Key vendors – Alpha MOS, E-Nose Pty, Electronic Sensor Technology, The e-Nose Company, Odotech

Technavio’s market research analysts predict the global e-nose market to grow at a CAGR of more than 2% between 2016 and 2020. The demand for e-noses stems from its increasing application in the food and beverage industry. The e-nose provides a cost-effective and absolute means of testing products, as it is able to test a product by virtue of the odor it emanates. At present, EMEA dominates the global e-nose market by accounting for around 52% of the overall market share. The presence of prominent vendors in the region coupled with its high installation rate is expected to boost growth in the e-nose market in EMEA during the forecast period.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the e-nose segments based on end users.

“The adoption of MEMS technology in e-noses is an ongoing trend in the market. The big sizes of sensors used in e-noses make them large and bulky. The adoption of micro-electro-mechanical sensors (MEMS) creates scope for miniaturization of e-noses, allowing its use for a much larger range of applications through miniaturization,” says Sunil Kumar Singh, Lead Analyst, Hardware & Semiconductor, Technavio Research.

By 2020, the environment monitoring segment is expected to dominate the global e-nose market by occupying around 36% of the overall market share. The growing need to identify toxic chemicals present in the air and to form a low-cost but effective method of analyzing toxic waste is the fundamental driving force behind the growth of the e-nose market for environment monitoring during the forecast period. E-noses in the environmental monitoring sector find application in detecting oil leaks, testing groundwater levels, monitoring air quality, and in the identification of toxic wastes.

The key vendors in the market include Alpha MOS, E-Nose Pty, Electronic Sensor Technology, The e-Nose Company, Odotech. The global e-nose market is not very competitive as there are just a few vendors in the market. With limited products catering to particular applications, there is little rivalry between providers. Most manufacturers are yet to find a mass market for e-noses. Each supplier just sells a few hundred units a year. There is constant R&D related activity and vendors are focused on offering low-cost, mass-producible e-noses that are highly portable.
