Consumer and SMB NAS: Key market research findings

  • Demand for NAS is augmented by the growing need for video surveillance at home
  • 2-bay systems account for a majority of the market’s revenue
  • Key vendors – Apple, Buffalo Technology, NETGEAR, QNAP, Seagate, Synology, and Western Digital

Technavio’s market research analysts predict the global consumer and SMB NAS market to grow at a CAGR of over 11% between 2016 and 2020. The prospect for growth in the market is driven primarily by the increasing need for video surveillance at home. Many consumers are installing surveillance cameras, both inside and outside their residences. The use of a network-attached storage (NAS) device for storing and processing these video surveillance camera feeds becomes essential as 24/7 feeds are difficult to store and process through a direct-attached storage (DAS) appliance. During 2015, the Americas dominated the global consumer and small and medium-sized business (SMB) NAS market by occupying almost 42% of the overall market space. The increasing use of advanced technologies in the region is expected to fuel growth in the consumer and SMB NAS market in the Americas during the forecast period.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the consumer and SMB NAS segments based on the system.

“Recently, there has been a rise in the emergence of hybrid storage arrays. Hybrid storage arrays include both flash drives and hard disk drives (HDDs). These are ideal for organizations that require exceptional performance for applications and additional capacity for less critical applications at a reduced cost. The adoption of NAS units is relatively lesser as compared to HDD-based units. This is expected to change in the coming years as new systems are being designed that can support both HDDs and solid-state drive (SSDs),” says Rakesh Panda, Lead Analyst, ICT, Technavio Research.

The 2-bay system accounted for more than 32% of total market share to dominate the global consumer and SMB NAS market in 2015. These systems are offered by almost all the vendors in the market as they offer additional storage capacity for both individual consumers and small office/home office (SOHO) users. In terms of NAS, 2-bay systems are shipped the most. This segment of the market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 11% during the forecast period and will surpass 1 million unit shipments by 2020.

Apple, Buffalo Technology, NETGEAR, QNAP, Seagate, Synology, and Western Digital are the key vendors in the market. The global consumer and SMB NAS market is anticipated to witness steady growth in the forecast period due to the dominance of international vendors and the increasing revenue contribution by the local vendors. Consumer NAS appliances have features and benefits that enhance consumer experience at homes. Therefore, technological advancements are likely to result in the integration of NAS appliances with home entertainment systems.
