Cloud DVR: Key market research findings

  • Rise in digitization drives market growth
  • Americas dominate the market geographically
  • Key vendors – ARRIS, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, and Ericsson

Technavio’s market research analysts expect the global cloud DVR market to reach almost $6 billion between 2016 and 2020. The rise in the digitization of television networks is the primary driver for growth in this market. Governments are mandating the installation of set-top box (STBs) in countries like India and China. Digitization enables service providers to offer more channels at lower costs and makes it possible for consumers to avail HD audio and video at reduced prices. Currently, the Americas dominate the cloud digital video recording (DVR) market by accounting for around 55% of the market share, with the US being the major revenue generator nation. The introduction of advanced technologies in the market coupled with the rapid digitization in South and Central American countries are some of the factors that are likely to boost the market’s growth in this region during the forecast period.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the cloud DVR segments based on type.

“The change in the architecture of cloud DVR is an ongoing trend in the market. Vendors are creating a unique copy of the different broadcasting content, each of which is stored in a centralized storage facility. Within the data center, vendors can share the hard disc drive space with the user’s cloud and eliminate the redundancy of orders. Besides, these hard disc drive spaces can be shared with different private clouds based on the user’s recordings,” says Ujjwal P Doshi, Lead Analyst, Media & Entertainment, Technavio Research.

During 2015, the satellite segment accounted for 38% of the market space to dominate the global cloud DVR market. The satellite cloud DVR market is experiencing significant growth in Africa, the Middle East, and South America where the penetration of satellite DVRs is relatively low. This segment offers a high-value proposition to vendors as they invest on STB hardware to provide DVR and other conventional functionalities integrated with the cloud services to compete against internet protocol television (IPTV) services, which have comparable functions.

The key vendors in the market include ARRIS, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, and Ericsson. The global cloud DVR market is highly competitive due to the presence of multiple global vendors. Though the market is consolidated with major vendors, many local vendors pose a significant challenge to these vendors.
