Access control: Key market research findings

  • Introduction of contactless access control
  • Integration of biometrics in smartcards

Technavio has released a new market research report on the global access control market, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14% between 2016 and 2020. Smartcard access control and biometric access control have emerged as suitable solutions to ensure physical and information security compared to traditional authentication solutions. The increase in public awareness about security risks is accelerating the growth of the access control market. North America is the largest market for access control systems, accounting for 38% of the overall market share. Much of this region’s growth can be attributed to increased government spending on access control because of the increase in instances of terrorist activities and gun violence.

The new industry research report from Technavio discusses in detail the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments

“The growing applications of hand scanner across various sectors is impacting the growth of this market. Hand geometry when used with smart devices such as tablets, laptops, and notebooks allows contactless approach without the need for additional hardware or sensors to recognize hand patterns. The use of hand geometry biometrics in different transactions has led to the emergence of three-factor authentication of end-users, where the end-user should have a smartcard, should know a PIN, and his biometric identity should match against database,” says Amrita Choudhury, Lead Analyst, ICT, Technavio Research

Smartcards are gaining traction in the biometrics market, where the vendors are focusing to integrate these two technologies. The implementation of biometric-based identification in smartcards, which is a combination of a stored template on a smartcard and a live scanner, in documents such as ID cards, passports, drivers’ license, social security cards, and medical and insurance cards improves the level of security in government organizations. The benefits of integrating biometrics with smartcards include enhanced privacy and security, improved system performance and efficiency and scalability.

The key vendors in the global access control market are 3M Cogent, Gemalto NV, Honeywell Security Group and Safran. The market is extremely fragmented with the presence of many small regional vendors and large multinational vendors. The market is dominated by major players who are acquiring smaller players to expand their product portfolio and boost their market share. Competition in this market is expected to intensify during the forecast period owing to increase in product and service extensions, technological innovations, and mergers and acquisitions.
