The global airborne ISR market was valued at more than USD 22 billion in 2016 and is expected to reach almost USD 26 billion by 2021, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on airborne ISR for the forecast period, 2017-2020. This market analysis, under the defense vertical, discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global airborne ISR market during the forecast period. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include BAE Systems, L-3 Communications, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and UTC Aerospace Systems.

In terms of geographical analysis, the Americas is likely to continue its domination over the global market and is expected to account for a revenue of almost USD 14 billion by 2020. The US will emerge as the key revenue-generator.

“Stealth aircraft are invisible to radars owing to the use of a variety of technologies that reduce reflection of radar, IR, visible light, and RF spectrum. While most conventional aircraft have a rounded shape, which makes them aerodynamic as well as an efficient radar reflector, a stealth aircraft is made up of flat surfaces and sharp edges that either absorbs the radar energy or reflects it away from the source and airplane. The F-117 Nighthawk, the B-2 Spirit, the F-22 Raptor, and the F-35 Lightning II, are some the US aircraft that are equipped with this system,” says Moutushi Saha, a lead analyst at Technavio for defense.

Text Box: Traditionally, wired sensor systems are used for specific detection purposes, resulting in added weight and increased design complexity of an aircraft. To tackle this challenge, EADS Innovation Works and external co-operation partners developed data-collecting wireless sensors in 2013. These sensors can be placed in areas such as the wingtip of an aircraft and are capable of powering themselves through thermo-electricity.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Focus on surveillance via unmanned systems

Drones or unmanned systems are smaller in size and cost-effective as opposed to their manned counterparts. They provide secure, reliable, and modernized digital communication through the use of various electronic systems. These systems include sensors, engines, autopilots, navigation systems and communication links. Furthermore, they feature onboard sensors such as laser light, SAR, inertial measurement unit, and global positioning system.

Increased focus on maritime security

Nations across the globe are focusing increasingly on enhancing their vigilance systems due to the possibilities of terrorist attacks through sea routes and increased illegal dealings in mid-oceans. Many countries are already augmenting their maritime security capabilities to ensure that they control hostile and illegal infiltration. Major defense contractors in the market are simultaneously enhancing or modernizing the existing airborne ISR systems (such as MPA, special mission aircraft, and UAVs) to cater to the global defense and security needs. The Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft is a major MPA, which is capable of a broad-area, maritime, and littoral (close-to-shore) operations. They are also employed for long-range ASW and anti-surface warfare (ASuW). The aircraft is equipped with the Raytheon AN/APY-10 maritime, littoral, and overland surveillance radar, which provides ultra-high resolution imaging modes for maritime and overland operations.

Investments in ISR payloads

There has been a noticeable increase in the investments made in ISR payloads. The increased focus on ISR payloads is fueled by the growing need to enhance border security, military intelligence, and surveillance, especially in developed countries such as the US and Japan. Countries are also focusing on acquiring UAV remote sensors owing to the changes in military missions, which include a shift to net-centric warfare, growing low-intensity conflicts, and reduced tolerance to life losses.

Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are Boeing, General Dynamics, Raytheon, Rockwell Collins, and Thales.

This research report includes an in-depth analysis, market shares, and sizes of the sub-segments and geography. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the key companies, including their market shares, business overview, and key financials. The market study also offers a detailed analysis of key drivers, challenges, and opportunities influencing this market.
