Emergence of 5G Networks to Aid Growth in the Global Millimeter Wave Technology Equipment Market

Renewable energy

The global millimeter wave technology equipment market was valued at $350 million in 2015 and is expected to reach around $2,430 million by 2020, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on millimeter wave technology equipment for the forecast period, 2016-2020. This market analysis, under the embedded systems vertical, discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global millimeter wave technology equipment market during the forecast period. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include BridgeWave Communications, E-Band Communications, Siklu Communication, and Sub10 Systems (Fastback Networks).

In terms of geographical analysis, the Americas will account for the largest share of the global market and is expected to account for a revenue of more than $899 million by 2020. The proliferation of smart TVs, high adoption of smartphones, and emerging technologies such as the IoT will act as the fundamental drivers for the growth of the market in this region.

“The millimeter wave technology provides higher bandwidth and plays a major role in mobile backhaul and wireless communications. There is an ongoing increase in the use of millimeter wave equipment for backhaul of small cells and macrocells. Millimeter wave equipment works on unlicensed and licensed E-band and W-band. As telecom firms find the solution promising for LTE macrocell and small cell backhauling, microwave equipment suppliers are adding millimeter wave gear to their portfolio,” says Sunil Kumar Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio for embedded systems.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Deployment of next-generation LTE wireless networks

The increasing data consumption has led to the high adoption of LTE wireless networks such as 4G, and the growing number of global commercial networks has made LTE as the fastest developing mobile technology. Specific bands that have been designated for LTE differ from carrier to carrier. For instance, Verizon Communications’s iPhone 6s devices use different bands than those sold by AT&T Inc. The use of multiple, widely spaced bands causes an LTE and 3G interference from different RF sources. This interference can be prevented with the deployment of millimeter wave equipment.

Development of 5G network

5G technology has the potential to provide approximately 40 times faster internet speed and at least four times more coverage worldwide than the current 4G LTE wireless communications standard. 5G testing has already started in several countries such as Finland, Russia, and South Korea. One of the most promising 5G technologies under consideration is the implementation of high-frequency signals. These signals can enable the allocation of greater bandwidth that allows faster delivery as well as high-quality video and multimedia content streaming.

Carrier aggregation

Carrier aggregation is used in LTE network to increase the bit rate by increasing the bandwidth. There is an anticipated increase in the RF content in smartphones and tablets as a result of carrier aggregation. Carrier aggregation combines a wide range of available spectrum using two or more bands at the same time to increase download and upload speeds. Currently, it is not a broad concept, but it has already been implemented in South Korea. It is likely to be implemented in the US as well by 2016.

Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are Agilent Technologies, Aviat Networks, CableFree (Acquired by Wireless Excellence Ltd.), Fujitsu, GigaBeam, Huawei Technologies, L-3 Communications Holdings, Lightpointe Communications, Loea, Brijot Imaging Systems, Inc. (Acquired by Microsemi), Millitech, Millivision Technologies, Millimeter Wave Products, Northrop Grumman, Pulse~LINK, SIAE Microelettronica, Smiths Group, Sub10 Systems, Tensorcom, Vubiq Networks, and Wasa.

This research report includes an in-depth analysis, market shares, and sizes of the sub-segments and geography. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the key companies, including their market shares, business overview, and key financials. The market study also offers a detailed analysis of key drivers, challenges, and opportunities influencing this market.
