The top three revenue contributing sensor segments are discussed below:
NOx sensors: The demand for NOx sensors is driven by the strict emission standards that are mandated by governments across the world. A shift in the focus of automotive manufacturers toward developing engines that operate in a lean range and significantly reduce fuel consumption is also driving the demand for NOx sensors.
“NOx sensors play a major role in the selective catalytic reduction system as they monitor NOx emissions and send feedback to the SCR control unit. The adoption of SCR technology in vehicles is increasing due to strict emission norms. For instance, the BS IV standards in India and Euro VI standards in Europe focus mainly on the reduction of NOx emissions, leading manufacturers to adopt SCR systems in vehicles to meet these emission standards,” says Bharath Kanniappan, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on automotive electronics.
O₂ sensors: The number of O₂ sensors used in a vehicle is increasing due to the introduction of onboard diagnostics. The incorporation of more than four O₂ sensors into luxury cars and HCVs is expected to reduce emission levels further. These sensors can help improve fuel economy, maintain peak engine performance, reduce exhaust emissions, and minimize the risk associated with catalytic converters in vehicles. Bosch introduced O₂ sensors in 1976, and since then, these sensors have become standard equipment in almost all vehicles.
MAP-MAF sensors: The ECU of a vehicle precisely regulates the air-fuel ratio to achieve maximum efficiency in engine operation and to ensure effective exhaust gas treatment. For these purposes, MAF and MAP sensors are used. Both sensors send a signal to the ECU, which is used to calculate the amount of air aspirated by the engine.
