Shift from Parenteral to Enteral-based Nutrition Therapy to Increase the Sales of Enteral Feeding Bags: Technavio

The global enteral feeding bags market was valued around $281 million in 2015 and is expected to surpass $385 million by 2020, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on enteral feeding bags to its health and wellness portfolio. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global enteral feeding bags market during the forecast period 2016-2020. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include B. Braun Melsungen, Medline, Medtronic, and Vesco Medical.

In terms of geographical analysis, the Americas will be the fastest-growing region in the global market, reaching revenues of $139 million by 2020. Much of the region’s growth is due to the high prevalence of chronic diseases and high awareness about the enteral nutrition therapy.

One of the major trends gaining traction in this market is the shift from parenteral to enteral-based nutrition therapy. Parenteral nutrition is managed through veins which increases the risk of infection due to needlestick injuries, whereas enteral nutrition is administered directly to the GI tract. Unlike parenteral nutrition where it is prescribed only in cases of intestine failures, enteral feeding is prescribed for bedridden and older patients with chronic ailments such as cancer, neurological disorders, and inherited metabolic diseases,” says Amber Chourasia, a senior analyst at Technavio for research on health and wellness.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Increase in hospital admissions

It has been observed since long that there is an increase in the number of hospital admissions due to the rise in chronic diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases like diabetes. The major factors that cause such chronic diseases are lack of physical activities, dietary habits, consumption of alcohol, and excessive smoking. About 80% of older adults have at least one chronic disease in the US and more than two-thirds of all health care costs are spent for treating these diseases. Such rise in the number of hospital admissions has increased the demand for enteral nutrition, resulting in the increase of the sales of enteral feeding systems such as enteral feeding bags.

Rise in premature births

As per WHO, it is observed that every year approximately 15 million babies are born before completion of 37 weeks of pregnancy, and about 1 million babies die annually because of the difficulties arising from preterm births. Over 60% preterm births occur in Africa and South Asia due to the factors such as increasing maternal age and underlying maternal health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes, greater use of infertility treatments leading to increased rates of pregnancy, and changes in obstetric practices such as more caesarean births before term. Preterm birth complications are the main cause of death of kids under five years of age and is prevalent across the globe. In higher income countries, the percentage of preterm birth is only 9% whereas in poor countries it is around 12%. In various countries, poor families are at a higher mortality risk as premature infants are at the risk of short- and long-term complications as their organ systems are not prepared to support life in the extra uterine environment. Another problem with premature infants is that they face problem in swallowing, sucking, or breathing which calls for the need of life support and critical care. To provide the much needed nutrition for growth and development of premature babies, the need for enteral feeding systems rises.

Improved healthcare system

Of late, a lot of improvement has been witnessed in the healthcare systems globally due to the increased investments by governments and pharmaceutical companies. The number of hospitals is also increasing due to easy access to funds gathered through domestic and private investments, capital market funds, non‐government funds, external borrowing and aid, foreign direct investment, and private equity investment. This trend is more visible in the emerging nations of the APAC region. Consumers have started confiding in the healthcare systems due to an increased access to medicines supported by government policies and programs, public/social insurance for the older adult population and those below the poverty line, and the availability of technologically-advanced equipment. Such developments have led to the easy availability of enteral nutrition facilities in hospitals and medical facilities. Furthermore, it is expected that the increased advantages of enteral nutrition such as cheap rates, fewer complications, and improved healing, weaning, and recovery process is increasing the adoption of these nutrition techniques in hospitals, which in turn, will boost the overall growth of the market.

Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are Adventa Health, Amsino Medical Products, Pacific Hospital Supply (PAHSCO), REDA Instrumente, Romsons Scientific and Surgical Industries, Shanghai Metal, SURU International, Valmed, and Vygon.
