Modified atmosphere packaging: Key market research findings
- North America dominates the market geographically
- Bakery and confectionery segment accounts for a majority share of the market’s revenue
- Key vendors – Linde, Dansensor, Sealed Air, Bemis, and Berry Plastic
Technavio’s market research analysts predict the market for modified atmosphere packaging to grow at a CAGR of almost 5% between 2016 and 2020. The growth of this market can be accredited to the need for increasing the shelf life of food products. A modified atmosphere packaging environment is formed from a finely balanced mix of ordinary atmospheric gasses. The gas mix slows down the aging process of the products to reduce color and odor loss, and bad taste resulting from spoilage, deterioration, and rancidity of the product. During 2015, the global modified atmospheric packaging market was dominated by North America with a market share of around 33%. Increased awareness about food safety and the implementation of the food safety modernization act in the region will propel the demand for modified atmospheric packaging in North America during the forecast period.
The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the modified atmosphere packaging segments based on the application.
“The emergence of biodegradable packaging is reflecting positively on the growth of this market. Biodegradable plastics are readily decomposed by microorganisms and help to reduce the toxic effect they have on the environment as compared to conventional plastics. They are made from plastics with biodegradable additives, which are, in turn, made from petrochemicals. The demand for biodegradable packaging is on an upsurge currently as companies are using packaging as a medium to promote safety and protect the environment,” says Sharan Raj, Lead Analyst, Transportation & Logistics, Technavio Research.
The bakery and confectionery segment accounted for more than 43% of the overall market revenue to become the dominant shareholder in the global market. Bakery products such as tortilla wraps, baguette, bagels, pita, and naan bread have a relatively lower water content. Generally, molds cause spoilage to these low moisture content bakery products. Modified atmosphere packaging resists the formation of mold growth with a high CO2 gas mixture; thus, offering a longer shelf life.
The key vendors in the global modified atmospheric packaging market comprise of Linde, Dansensor, Sealed Air, Bemis, and Berry Plastic. Since the competition is based on offering innovative products, vendors are investing in R&D to develop advanced packaging solutions. Apart from providing innovative products, vendors are also offering value-added services, and strong customer service and support.
