Foundry and forging robots: Key market research findings

  • APAC dominates the market geographically
  • Metal foundry accounts for a majority of the market’s revenue
  • Key vendors – ABB, FANUC, KUKA, OMRON Adept Technologies, and Yaskawa Electric

Technavio’s market research analysts predict the global foundry and forging robots market to grow at a CAGR of around 7% between 2016 and 2020. The growth of this market is augmented by the growing adoption of foundry robots for impregnation techniques. New impregnation techniques, such as the R-FL-Duplex+ devised, have been designed by Ultraseal International and Continuous Flow Impregnation System (CFi) by Godfrey and Wing. The CFi system uses foundry robots that transfer the casting part rapidly through the three-stage module of vacuum, wash, and hot water cure. During 2015, the global foundry and forging robots market was dominated by APAC with a market share of more than 46%. The growth of the market in this region is fueled by the rising adoption of foundry and forging robots in the semiconductor industry.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the foundry and forging robots segments based on the end-user.

“Vendors in the market are devising newer technologies to stay competitive and address specific requirements from end-users. The Integrated Force Control function program from ABB Robotics enables the integration of various individual robot software features required for machining and assembly into a single module. This enables the robots to behave intelligently and react like a human being, responding to process variations and fluctuations by analysis of real-time inputs,” says Bharath Kanniappan, Lead Analyst, Industrial Automation, Technavio Research.

By 2020, the metal foundry segment will account for around 69% of the market’s revenue to become the primary revenue generating segment in the global market. Foundries are a key step in metal casting and finishing the process. They are complex units with harsh working environments as temperatures often range from 2,000°F and contain high silica dust exposure, making it difficult and unsafe for human operators. Instead, foundry robots that are programmed to carry out tedious and repetitive tasks, involving molten metals at heavy weights in a harsh environment, are used in metal foundry units.

The key vendors in the global foundry and forging robots market include ABB, FANUC, KUKA, OMRON Adept Technologies, and Yaskawa Electric. The market is characterized by the presence of several established international robot manufacturers who generate revenues through both direct and indirect sales. Indirect sales take place with the help of local representatives, certified distributors or dealers, contractors, and system integrators. Vendor competition in the market is intense and vendors usually compete on the basis of product features, price, customized solutions, and services offered. Established robotic companies mainly focus on expanding their geographical reach, increasing production capacities, and upselling products by upgrading the existing ones. Also, manufacturers are solely responsible for the integration of systems, testing, and commercializing these products into the market.
