London, 24 November 2014 –The Global High-speed Data Card Market will struggle to maintain growth, only posting a CAGR of 0.40 percent from 2015-2019, says research firm TechNavio.
These USB devices, used for accessing the internet, are facing a litany of challenges. Mobile hotspot routers, or MiFi devices have stepped up as a major contender for internet connectivity on-the-go.
Although more expensive than a data card, mobile hotspot routers provide added benefits that overshadow data cards.
About the Report
The new report from TechNavio indicates that the proliferation and increased adoption of smartphones and tablets, coupled with their mobile broadband functionality have reduced dependence on external broadband devices such as data cards.
“The ‘tether’ option on smartphones enables the use of mobile broadband plans for a specific mobile device on the network to be used in other devices as well. In tethering, a smartphone functions as Wi-Fi hotspot or router, enabling internet connectivity for a PC, tablet, or laptop, either wirelessly, via Bluetooth, or through a USB cable. It allows the user to connect to multiple devices at no extra cost,” says Faisal Ghaus, Vice President of TechNavio.
“This has removed the need for data cards and will negatively impact the revenue of the Global High-speed Data Card market during the forecast period.”
