Rising Need to Curb Road Fatalities to Fuel the Adoption of Automotive Defogger Systems Globally, Says Technavio

Renewable energy

The global automotive defogger system market was valued at more than 165 million units in 2015 and is expected to reach almost 200 million by 2020, says Technavio.

Technavio’s  automotive electronics portfolio has announced its latest market research report on automotive defogger systems for the forecast period, 2016-2020. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global automotive defogger system market during the forecast period. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include Delphi, DENSO, DuPont, and NXP Semiconductors.

In terms of geographical analysis, Asia will account for the largest share of the global market and is expected to surpass 107 million units by 2020. Thailand, India, and Japan will emerge as the key revenue-generators.

“The introduction of hot wire anemometer in defogger systems is revolutionizing the global market for automotive defogger systems. A hot wire anemometer, also known as a thermal anemometer, is used to measure the fluid velocity by measuring the heat lost into the environment from the fluid. Modern vehicles are increasingly incorporating hot wire anemometers as they provide an accurate measure of the defogger’s airflow, which is required to maintain clear visibility,” says Siddarth Jaiswal, a lead analyst at Technavio for automotive electronics.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Defoggers enabling better on-road visibility for drivers

Drivers often face fogging problems during monsoon and winter seasons, especially in cold countries. When the outside weather is cold, and the heater is turned on inside the car, there is fog formation on the inside of the car window and windshield. Furthermore, when the outside temperature and moisture content more than the temperature inside the car, moisture starts condensing at the exterior glass surface of the car, leading to unfavorable driving experience. As a result, people are increasingly adopting rear window defoggers, side view mirror defoggers, and window defoggers in minivans, cars, and SUVs. Fatality rates from accidents have reduced drastically with the advancement of defoggers and demister systems.

Efficient energy management making defogger systems more commercially viable

Advanced defoggers are energy efficient and are enabled with timers that toggle the system on and off automatically after a regular interval of time, saving energy consumption. Pre-conditioning the HVAC aids in conserving a considerable amount of fuel and energy. Few manufacturers had come up with electric HVAC systems to reduce the fuel consumption. The system also allows users to adjust heater settings accordingly to prevent fog from forming in the windscreen, which results in efficient use of power.

Aftermarket empowered through compact custom kits

Several aftermarket manufacturers provide a 12 V portable car heater, which serves as both a defroster and a heater in the car. Such systems are easy to install and can be used in any direction required in the car. Their power consumption is relatively lesser compared to that used in an HVAC system for defogging. Aftermarket manufacturers are now developing defogger elements that are like a pre-spaced roll. These elements align and fit on a wider range of rear window sizes. Heating elements form a great bond with a car window glass and are similar to the ones that come as OEMs fitment.
