Rising Construction and Infrastructural Activities Worldwide to Propel the Global Demand for Lime

Renewable energy

The global lime market was valued at almost 100 metric tons in 2015 and is expected to reach almost 124 metric tons by 2020, says Technavio.

Technavio’s  metals and minerals portfolio has announced its latest market research report on lime for the forecast period, 2016-2020. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global lime market during the forecast period. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include Carmeuse, Graymont, Lhoist, Mississippi Lime, and Minerals Technologies.

In terms of geographical analysis, APAC will be the fastest-growing region in the global market and is expected to reach over 70 million metric tons by 2020. China will emerge as the key revenue-generator in the region.

“Vendors in the global market for lime are focusing on more efficient methods of producing lime. Companies are moving toward production through vertical kilns owing to their energy efficiency when compared to horizontal kilns. They are also installing heat exchangers to recover heat from flue gases, which can be used to preheat the feed limestone, thereby reducing the fuel consumption by approximately 25%. Switching to less carbon-intensive sources of fuel is gaining huge traction in the global lime market,” says Ajay Adhikhari, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on metals and minerals.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Increase in demand for construction and infrastructure development

In the construction sector, lime finds application in the production of concrete and AAC. The increased construction and infrastructural activities across the globe is propelling the consumption of polymers and concrete, and as a result propelling demand for lime. A rise in the population in EMEA, especially in Africa and the Middle East, is the driving force behind the growth of construction activities. Further, developments in technologies, such as smart building technologies, in construction jobs attract contractors toward building new, innovative structures, particularly in countries such as South Africa, Switzerland, and Egypt, which will subsequently fuel the demand for lime from the construction industry during the forecast period.

Increase in use of lime for animal waste treatment

The use of lime in animal waste treatment is cost effective and helps to control odor and maintain pH. Lime treatment is almost half the cost of aerobic and anaerobic digestion. Hydrogen sulfide present in animal waste is hazardous in high concentration and has a very unpleasant odor. The calcium ions present in lime react with sulfur to form complexes. The process results in the elimination of the foul odors of biological waste.

Automotive weight reduction strategy

Several organizations across the automotive, industrial machinery, and telecommunications industries are focused on the development of lightweight products in an attempt to improve quality and reduce the overall weight of their products. Aluminum is one of the most popular alternative materials among various manufacturers to reduce the weight of the vehicle. Quicklime is an essential component in the production of various metals including aluminum and copper. For instance, several auto components that are usually manufactured using ferrous casting materials (iron) are being replaced by non-ferrous casting materials such as aluminum. These materials are lightweight and resistant to corrosion and have high conductivity.

Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are Imerys, Omya, Okutama Kogyo, and Schaefer Kalk.

This research report includes an in-depth analysis, market shares, and sizes of the sub-segments and geography. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the key companies, including their market shares, business overview, and key financials.
