New satellite networks and improved connectivity options: Latest trends in global IFE market

Renewable energy

This market research study presents a detailed segmentation of the global in-flight entertainment (IFE) market by product (connectivity, content, and hardware), and by geography (Americas, APAC, and EMEA). The top vendors identified in the market are Global Eagle Entertainment, Gogo, Lufthansa Systems, Panasonic Avionics, Rockwell Collins, Thales Group, and Zodiac Aerospace.

Technavio’s market research analysts estimate the global IFE market, to grow at a CAGR of 13% between 2016 and 2020. Aircrafts are witnessing rise in the installations of IFE systems, owing to the growing demand from passengers. IFE systems provide entertainment facilities to passengers during their air travel, and are increasingly being adopted by budget carriers. Growing aircraft deliveries, rise in passenger numbers traveling in premium classes, and increased developments in commercial aviation are influencing the sales of IFE sales in aircrafts. The Americas holds 53% of the total market share, owing to rise in the number of operational aircrafts in the region.

The new market research report from Technavio provides a breakdown and analysis of the in-flight entertainment segments by technology.

“Of late, the vendors are making massive improvements in the flight connectivity segment. With airlines across the world increasingly adopting air-to-ground (ATG) and satellite networks, the market for in-flight entertainment will grow over the next four years. The network providers are investing in new-generation high-throughput satellite technology which will replace the use of traditional fixed satellite service and provide high-speed Internet access at reduced costs. For example, SmartSky Networks collaborated with satellite companies and designed a new 4G LTE ATG network to deliver connectivity solution to airlines,” says Abhay Singh, Lead Analyst, Aerospace & Defense, Technavio Research

The hardware segment monopolizes the market and accounts for around 55% of the total market share. One of the crucial components of IFE is the hardware that runs in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) systems and allows users to stream content on board. Moreover, hardware suppliers are also focusing on lighter and low-energy consumption products, which will help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) reduce the overall weight of the aircraft.
