The global MEA market was valued at USD 21 billion in 2016 and is expected to surpass USD 26 billion by 2021, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on the global MEA market, under its aerospace portfolio. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends and offers an analysis of key vendors like Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Embraer, and Honeywell International.

According to Avimanyu Basu, a lead analyst for aerospace research at Technavio, “Strict and supportive regulations to reduce emissions is one of the major drivers of the global MEA market. For instance, the Paris Climate Agreement was directed toward bringing down the levels of the US greenhouse gas emissions by up to 28% by 2025.”

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has also revealed that it would set up regulations to act against the hazardous effects of jet engines on public health and climate change. EPA and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have directed their efforts toward developing guidelines that will bring down carbon emissions from commercial aircraft.

Meeting power demand through no-bleed concept

In a traditional commercial jet, the environmental control system and wing ice protection system use the hot air generated from the engine to energize the systems. On an electric airplanes platform, this bleed air is superfluous because the systems are electrically powered. Since MEA models generate more electric power demand as compared to traditional designs, the implementation of no-bleed systems is practical.

Integrated propulsion control for overall stability during normal operation and emergency

In order to attain adequate integrated propulsion control, the electric power management system should be interlinked with every process of the aircraft, which requires a stable power supply and swift turnaround response in the case of an emergency. A traditional fuel pump driven by mechanical power should be mounted on the engine accessory gearbox, but for the electric power system (as integrated into MEA models), the system should be flexible upon being mounted on the fuel pump. This enables an all-around approach for generating high performance. Synchronization between aircraft control, electric power management, and stability of engine operation should contribute to effective energy management during normal operations and provide the necessary safety and stability in an emergency.
