Microstream Capnography: Latest Development in the Global Capnography Market, says Technavio

Renewable energy

The global capnography market was valued at around $300 million in 2015 and is expected to reach $640 million by 2020, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on global capnography market to its orthopedics and general medical devices portfolio. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global capnography market during the forecast period 2016-2020. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include Masimo, Medtronic, Philips Healthcare Informatics, Smiths Medical, and Welch Allyn.

In terms of geographical analysis, the Americas will be the largest region in the global capnography market, reaching revenues of about $455 million by 2020. The implementation of new medical standard, which have allowed the use of capnographs for a wide range of indications including general anesthesia and CPR, makes North Americas the largest revenue generating region in the market.

“The adoption of microstream capnography is based on correlation spectroscopy and helps in early detection of any respiratory issues. Neonatal care is extensively using this technology because it efficiently and selectively emits discrete IR wavelengths to measure CO2 absorption. The vendors in the market are focusing on launching new products with enhanced features that improve post-  operation monitoring and incorporate new alarm management capabilities,” says Barath Palada, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on orthopedics and general medical devices.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Regulatory guidelines endorsing use of capnography technique

Many regulatory organizations like the Joint Commission, ASA, AHA, and AAOMS have mandated the use of capnography equipment in hospitals. The initial use of capnography was used to monitor individuals who are self-administering anesthesia for pain management. It was introduced to monitor basic anesthesia and then, for moderate sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia. The use of capnography for numerous treatments such as primary anesthetic monitoring, moderate or deep sedation, and CPR will help in the evolution of the market during the forecast period.

Limitations in pulse oximetry devices

The traditional method to assess respiratory function is through a pulse oximetry, and it measures the oxygen saturation of blood. It delays the detection of respiratory depression during the delivery of supplemental oxygen, which has fueled the use and demand for capnography. The use of capnography helps in identifying early signs of opioid-induced respiratory depression when patients are under supplemental oxygenation. Sanctions from several medical organizations like AAOMS, ISMP, AHA, and the Society of Interventional Radiology approving the use of capnography over pulse oximetry will result in prompt and better medical care.

Growing risk of respiratory compromise

The increase levels of CO₂ emissions is increasing the risk of respiratory diseases across the globe. Pediatrics have the highest incidents of respiratory failure. Almost two-thirds of the cases of respiratory failure in children is detected during the first postnatal year, and more than half of those cases are during the Neonatal Period. Capnography assists in evaluating the cause and severity of respiratory distress and aid in precise treatment decisions.

Recurring revenue from disposables

The use of reusable consumables generates a high risk of contamination as a result medical professionals prefer using disposable consumables to the reusable ones. The cost of materials and components used for the manufacturing disposables products is lesser compared to reusable items.  Also, vendors offer discounts only on the capnography equipment but not on the disposables helping them to generate substantial revenue and maintain adequate levels of profit margins.

Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are ATHENA GTX, Braun & Company, COMDEK, DIXTAL Biomedica Industria E Comercio, Drägerwerk Medical, Hologic, Hospira, MEDACX, Mediana, Medilogix, Mennen Medical, Mindray, Nihon Kohden, Oridion Systems, OSI Systems, Physio-Control, Spacelabs Healthcare, Triton Electronics, Viamed, Weinmann Gerate fur Medizin, and Zoll.

This research report includes an in-depth analysis and market shares and sizes of the sub-segments and geography. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the key companies, including their market shares, business overview, key financials, etc. The market study also offers a detailed analysis of key drivers, challenges, and opportunities influencing this market.
