IT and Telecom Equipment Move towards Greener Future

Renewable energy

Environmental awareness has increased among IT and Telecom equipment companies due to the substantial e-waste generated by these two industries.
In the Telecom industry, the concept of recyclable Green Mobiles has been slowly catching up. Green mobiles are manufactured using recycled and biodegradable materials that reduce the overall carbon impact. The global recycled mobile market is expected to reach $5,240.2 million by the end of 2011. With the explosive growth of the mobile market, various governments have also begun encouraging the adoption of green mobiles. Mobile vendors such as Samsung and Nokia are also encouraging the trend of recycling mobiles.

The IT industry too has been adopting measures to recycle most of its components and reduce dumping of e-waste in landfills. Government regulations such as WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) are being adopted by companies to promote recycling. Approximately 98.9 percent of components of IT equipment can be either recycled or reused.

Key trends in the market:
·         Organic printed solar cells have been witnessing increased adoption
·         China is leading the APAC region in terms of green funds allocation
·         Increase in use of smart water meters to compute water consumption in developed markets
·         Around 80 percent of e-waste generated is from developed countries
