Introduction of ULM Batteries to Modernize the Global Commercial Aircraft Battery Market, says Technavio

Renewable energy

The global commercial aircraft battery market was valued at around USD 131 million in 2015 and is expected to surpass USD 185 million by 2020, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on commercial aircraft battery during the forecast period, 2016-2020. This market analysis, under the aerospace components vertical, discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global commercial aircraft battery market during the forecast period. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include Concorde Battery, Cella Energy, Saft, Sion Power, and Tadiran Batteries.

In terms of geographical analysis, APAC will be the largest region in the global market and is expected to reach revenues of around USD 73 million by 2020. Japan, China, South Korea, and Taiwan will emerge as the key revenue-generators.

The vendors in the market are developing a new battery technology that has an innovative barrier between the electrodes in a Li-ion battery. The barrier in this new technology is fabricated out of nanofibers extracted from Kevlar. These new batteries are perfect for modern passenger airliners and have nanotechnology-enabled membrane. These membranes have heat resistance properties, can withstand higher temperatures, and project a better chance of surviving a fire. Furthermore, these batteries have small and thin membranes that allow energy to travel same as the regular-sized batteries,” says Avimanyu Basu, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on aerospace components.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Growing usage of Li-ion batteries

The use of Li-ion batteries supports refueling operations and assist power braking systems when the aircraft is towed. These batteries are enabled with the functionality of critical electrical power equipment in case of a power failure. The APU provides power for the onboard activities and backup power support for flight control electronics. Additionally, the high-energy density and low maintenance properties result in its high demand in the market.

Introduction of digital data bus

The vendors in the market are developing integrated avionics software and large displays for the commercial aircraft cockpits. These digital cockpits have trackballs and interface with graphical point-and-click display navigation systems. Manufacturers are investing in technology upgrade traditional glass cockpit to computer-like Windows. These windows system can manipulate data with a mouse or other click devices. The technology has an interface familiarly known as WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointers) technology. Moreover, enhancements to introduce touchscreen cockpits will enhance the entry and observation of flight data efficiently.

Reduction in Li-ion battery costs

The companies in the market are enhancing the technology and development efforts to reduce the cost of Li-ion batteries and promote the use of them for commercial aircraft. For instance, Tesla, a Li-ion battery manufacturer, quoted that it will bring down the cost of Li-ion batteries to USD 100 by 2020.

Other prominent vendors identified in this report are Aerolithium Batteries, EaglePitcher, Gill Battery, GS Yuasa, HBL Power Systems, and True Blue Power.

This research report includes an in-depth analysis, market shares and sizes of the sub-segments and geography. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the key companies, including their market shares, business overview, and key financials. The market study also offers a detailed analysis of key drivers, challenges, and opportunities influencing this market.
