Introduction of 3D In-Mold Technology Will Drive Growth of the Global In-Mold Label Market through 2020: Technavio

Renewable energy

Food and beverage is expected to be the largest end user in the global in-mold label market, accounting for around 80% of the overall market share by 2020, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on in-mold label to its tags and labels portfolio. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global in-mold label market during the forecast period 2016-2020. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include Avery Dennison, CCL Industries, Constantia Flexibles, Coveris, EVCO Plastics, and Inland.

In terms of geographical analysis, Europe will be the highest revenue generating region in the market and will dominate the market during the forecast period by occupying around 61% of the total market share.

The latest trend gaining traction is the introduction of 3D in-mold labelling technology. Its introduction has resulted in innovations of designs which enables the use of high-quality visuals across container surfaces, irrespective of the texture, dimension, or shape of the mold. It offers manufacturers with options to replace metal forms, paintings, dipped coatings, pad printing, and other post-productive decorative techniques with durable, high-quality, single-step labels that create a fully decorated resin part right in the mold,” says, Sharan Raj, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on tags and labels.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Increased use of higher cavitation molds in North America

The demand for labels in North America is the highest, accounting for a minimum of around 90 million units. The manufacturers in North America are using more of high cavitation in-mold labeling machines due to their faster production rates and reduction in cycle time from 14 seconds to 3.5 seconds. This mold ensures that 32 cavities open at the same time, resulting in reduction of the production time by over 60%. North American manufacturers prefer high cavitation machines over low cavitation machines, as the latter cannot produce large quantities of labels and are quite expensive. Among various vendors in the region, StackTeck is developing 2 x 32 and 4 x 12 stack mold designs to meet the increasing demand for in-mold labels in North America.

Growing demand for in-mold labeling in thin-walled containers

Thin-walled containers are often manufactured using injection molding process and have a wall thickness less than 0.62 millimeters. The introduction of in-mold label machines in injecting molding process reduces the weight of the container by over 10% and reduces the cycle time by around 3 seconds. Such developments have propelled manufacturers to focus on the integration of labeling solutions along with injection molding machines. Apart from this, thin walled containers not only reduce raw material costs by around 40%, but also minimize the transportation costs by around 20% These containers are also beneficial in reducing carbon emissions by over 50% during manufacturing and transporting process. For example, a Canada-based molding system called Husky Injection Molding Systems, provides in-mold labeling solutions which not only improves the appeal of the product but also enhances the functionality of the package.

Amplified output through automation

In mold-labels help to reduce manual operations such as hand finishing, polishing, and changing of stack and subsequently minimize the labor cost as they involve less labor during the recycling process.  These labels are not required to be removed during the recycling process, which makes recycling a single step process. Vendors are concentrating more on developing advanced technologies and are switching to in-molds as besides reducing manual labor, makes easy changeover for stack molds.

Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are CBW Automation, Multi-Color, Netstal Machinery, Smyth Companies, StackTeck, Transilwrap, UPM Raflatac, and WS Packaging Group.

This research report includes an in-depth analysis and market shares and sizes of the sub-segments and geography. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the key companies, including their market shares, business overview, key financials, etc. The market study also offers a detailed analysis of key drivers, challenges, and opportunities influencing this market.
