Safety concerns with industrial robots
Workplace accidents have necessitated the safety caging of robots by manufacturers to prevent fatal incidents and limit any contact with workers in a working environment. Conventionally, robots were enclosed in a cage to ensure human personnel safety. However, this restricts their functionality and access to key areas of workspaces. As a result, individual dedicated robot controllers are being increasingly adopted for controlling and regulating collaborative robots at all times among several OEMs across the globe.
Rise in adoption of Chinese robots and robot controllers
The government of China has created a favorable environment for the robotic industry with policies, such as investment credits. The implementation of such policies endorse the sales of indigenous industrial robots, robot controllers, and robot peripherals, subsequently fueling the growth of local vendors. The EU has allotted a budget of around $352 billion to the European Funds for Strategic Investments, European Structural and Investments Funds, and the European research funding program, Horizon 2020, in an attempt to promote industrial development of both small and large-scale industries. Horizon 2020 is a significant EU research program premised on industrial innovation that was launched in December 2013. Such programs were created to encourage the adoption of robotics as a key resource to help enterprises secure an edge in the global market.
The widespread implementation of Horizon 2020 is enabling Europe to compete against economies that offer advantages such as low-cost labor and high rates of automation. Collaboration with academic institutions to initiate projects on robotics is one of the key focus areas of Horizon 2020. This is likely to prompt small and medium enterprises to integrate robot controllers and industrial robots into their factories for processes such as material handling, assembly/disassembly, welding, painting, machine tending, and foundry and forging.
