The top three revenue contributing application segments are discussed below:
Gynecology
The gynecology segment accounted for around 42% of the global urology robotic surgery market in 2015. Hysterectomy, which is the surgical removal of a uterus and sacrocolpopexy, which is the suturing of synthetic mesh to the sacrum to connect and support a prolapsed vagina surgeries, are commonly performed in gynecological procedures. When the da Vinci robotic system is used for a hysterectomy, there is less pain and a faster recovery. In 2014, about 449,000 procedures accounting for around 52% of overall gynecological surgeries were conducted using robotic systems in the US.
“Global gynecology robotic surgery market presents huge opportunities for the growth of vendors. Technological advancements in the surgical robotic devices and growing preference for MI surgery will lead to the replacement of traditional surgical methods in both developing and developed economies. For instance, there is an increased usage of da Vinci surgical system, an approved product offering from Intuitive Surgical, owing to its effectiveness in gynecological applications,” says Barath Palada, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on urology devices.
Major vendors are focusing on developing new technologies to help improve the quality of life of patients and increase their market shares, and extend geographical presence of their businesses, while smaller companies are emphasizing the development of innovative devices and platforms.
General surgery
The general surgery segment is the second largest and fastest-growing market in the US with procedural volume. The robotics surgeries address some general surgeries which include gastric bypass, bowel resection, cholecystectomy, adrenalectomy, and oesophagostomy. The global general robotic surgery market is expected to benefit from the growing incidence of disorders such as abdominal diseases and esophagus diseases. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, approximately 60 to 70 million people were affected by digestive diseases. The Intuitive Surgical’s robotic system performed various general surgeries with fewer side effects, which include cholecystectomy, colorectal surgery, hernia repair, and bariatric surgery. The increased technological advancements in other robotic surgeries have fueled the market growth. Intuitive Surgical has launched technologies such as da Vinci Xi Surgical System, EndoWrist Stapler, and EndoWrist Vessel Sealer, which have enabled them to offer MIS approaches to a broader range of colorectal surgery patients.
Urology
In the US, around 20% of all urologic procedures are performed using robotic surgical devices. Urological disorders such as cystectomy (bladder cancer), prostate cancer, kidney disorder, and pyeloplasty (urinary blockage) affect the male or female reproductive organs and urinary tract. The use of robotics is preferred owing to its advantages over open surgeries and due to the increasing demand for minimally invasive surgeries. The minimally invasive nature of robotic surgeries is ideal for delicate and complex urologic surgeries, which include prostatectomies in which the target site is tightly confined and surrounded by nerves, which cause urinary blockages. Robotic surgeries are used to treat certain conditions affecting the urinary tract system including the bladder and kidney, and male reproductive organs, such as the prostate. Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci system and SPORT (single port orifice robotic technology) surgical system are the two FDA-approved robotic surgery devices used for treating urological disorders such as prostatectomy and partial nephrectomy. Prostatectomy using da Vinci results in fewer complications, blood loss, pain, and infections compared to traditional open surgeries.
