Peripheral diseases

In 2015, peripheral diseases accounted for around 65% share of the global thrombectomy devices market. Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is a disorder of blood circulation that causes the narrowing of blood vessels outside of the heart and the brain, which occurs in the arteries or veins. PVD causes pain and fatigue mostly in the legs during exercise.

Around 3 million people are suffering from PVD across the world each year.  As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at present, approximately 9 million people in the US suffer from PAD annually. The occurrence of PAD is increasing in the Americas due to excessive smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other related factors,” says Barath Palada, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on cardiovascular devices.

In Europe, the prevalence of PAD has increased around 14% over the last decade. Most diabetic patients in Europe are not revascularized, due to a lack of trained professionals. High cholesterol and rise in the diabetic patient pool are some of the factors resulting in the upsurge of PVD cases in APAC.

Coronary diseases

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a cardiovascular disease in which a waxy substance called plaque, builds up inside the coronary arteries. Coronary arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. When plaque builds up in the arteries, the condition is called atherosclerosis, which results in blockage of arteries. According to the Heart Foundation, CHD is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases, which claims the highest mortality rate. Based on global statistics, there is about 380,000 death recorded each year because of CHD.  The high prevalence of diabetes and hypertension are the major factors contributing to the mortality pool in the Americas.

Neurovascular diseases

The neurovascular disease is an abnormality in blood vessels where there is a blockage in the blood supply to the brain and spine. The narrowing of arteries results in the reduction of blood flow to the brain and rises the risk of stroke, specifically ischemic stroke. The condition where the weakening of arteries may create brain aneurysms and increase the risk of intracranial bleeding is known as hemorrhagic stroke. Over the period, the global burden of stroke is mounting because of the changing lifestyles, food habits, and excessive consumption of alcohol. According to the CDC, in 2016, there is 128,978 death recorded in the US due to neurovascular or cerebrovascular diseases. In EMEA, cardiovascular diseases account for highest patient pool in the South Africa, after HIV/AIDS. In APAC, cerebrovascular diseases have a great impact on the life expectancy in China and stroke is highly prevalent in China.
