Telecom cloud billing services: Key market research findings

  • Increasing importance of mobile wallet
  • Growing demand for real-time and online billing processes

Technavio has added a new market research report on the telecom cloud billing services market, to its telecom portfolio. The telecom cloud billing services market is expected to generate revenues worth $14 billion between 2015 and 2019. APAC leads the global market for telecom cloud billing services, accounting for around 35% of the total market share. Much of this region’s growth comes from the increase in the number of mobile subscriptions in the region.

The new industry research report from Technavio discusses in detail the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

“The increased use of mobile wallet is one of the interesting trends that has gained traction in recent times. The convergent charging software helps the telecom operators integrate the charging system with various financial institutions for transferring money or paying bills. For instance, Bharti Airtel Ltd. offers a mobile wallet service that allows subscribers to use their mobile phone for every payment option. Japanese telecom operator NTT DoCoMo has a mobile wallet service that allows mobile phone users to replace their existing credit card with the mobile phone,” says Navin Rajendra, Lead Analyst, ICT, Technavio Research.

The market is dominated by prepaid subscribers with close to 79% of GSM subscribers using these services. Currently, many telecom service providers are adopting a customer-centric business model to increase their prepaid customer base. As a result, they are combining multiple services and offering bundled services based on individual requirements. Also, most telecom operators are using an online billing process for bill generation and payment receipt instead of sending individual bills.

The leading vendors in the telecom cloud billing services market include Amdocs, CSC, CGI, NetCracker and Oracle. The increased usage of data services being provided by telecom operators has created a need for a robust billing system. Intense competition in the global telecom billing software market drives the adoption of telecom billing software. To counter the declining average revenue per user, telecom operators are expected to capitalize on value-added services (VAS). It is expected to emerge as a key revenue channels in developed markets such as North America and Europe.
