Global water-based personal lubricant market
In 2015, the water-based segment accounted for a maximum share of around 72% in the global personal lubricant market and will continue to dominate the market during the forecast period. The growth of this sector is attributed to their increasing popularity and low price which is leading several vendors to provide these products to increase their market share. Water-based personal lubricants have been available in the market since a long time.
“Water-based personal lubricants are more familiar and popular among consumers, than other lubricants. They are compatible with the condom, which increases their acceptance value and are gaining popularity owing to their accessibility, low-cost, and safe usage with latex condoms. K‑Y Liquid/Jelly, Astroglide, Good Head, Wet Flavored, Replens, and K-Y Liquibeads are some of the brands popular in this market space,” says Amber Chourasia, a senior analyst at Technavio for research on health and wellness.
Global silicone-based personal lubricant market
The silicone-based personal lubricant segment is considered the fastest-growing segment in the global personal lubricant market and is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 9% during the forecast period. Silicone-based personal lubricants are increasingly demanded by women experiencing vaginal dryness as they help provide moisture content during sex. This lubricant is as safe as the water-based lubricant but provides longer-lasting moisture. It also works well for breastfeeding women, postmenopausal women, or women experiencing vaginal dryness from the use of birth control pills. Vendors in this market segment are trying to improve the performance of their products to increase the demand further. Silicone lubricants are easily available through various distribution channels, from online stores to drug stores to grocery stores. However, this segment has its set of disadvantages. Silicone-based lubricants are stickier and messier than oil-based or water-based lubricants and are also not compatible with silicone sex toys and not recommended for oral sex. Although they do not guarantee safety, the chances of infections and allergic reactions in silicone-based lubricants are less compared with water-based lubricants. These drawbacks have led to the emergence of a new category of organic personal lubricants, thus lowering the demand for silicone-based lubricants.
Global oil-based personal lubricant market
The oil-based lubricants are mainly in demand from the low-income group or consumers, especially in the rural areas of developing countries such as Brazil, India, and China, who lack awareness regarding other types of lubricants. Such lubricants are popular among women who are sensitive to certain additives and preservatives, which are common in other lubricants. These lubricants make intercourse easier with water, as they are naturally moisturizing and last longer than other lubricants. However, oil-based lubricants are not very popular because of their incompatibility with latex condoms, as they quickly weaken latex and can cause condoms to break. The demand for these condoms is also from Middle Eastern countries, where products with natural and organic ingredients are preferred. Nevertheless, the oil-based lubricant market is likely to show signs of growth during the forecast period due to the introduction of oil-based organic lubricants, which are free from petrochemicals and other allergens. Over 95% of organic lubricants are safer than silicone-based lubricants.
