The top three revenue contributing application segments are discussed below:

Neurostimulation devices

In 2015, neurostimulation devices accounted for around 46% share in the global neurosurgery market. These are implantable devices that deliver electrical stimulation to the brain and nervous system to treat neurological disorders such as epilepsy, dystonia, PD, pain, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and tremors. They are powered by batteries that are replaced every 3-5 years. The basic components of neurostimulation devices are generator, leads and programmer.

“Neurostimulation devices include SCS, DBS, SNS, VNS, and GES, and continue to demonstrate significant improvements in patient outcomes. Such factor offers the market with huge growth opportunities. Vendors of the market are investing in the development of new products and research for the application of these products for other disease treatments,” says Barath Palada, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on orthopedics and general medical devices.

Neurointerventional devices

These devices are used in neurointerventional surgeries performed on abnormal vessels in the brain using MI techniques, imaging guidance, and by use of special types of microcatheter, guidewires, and other instruments. These devices are used in procedures, such as stenting techniques, brain aneurysm, neuro-thrombectomies, and coiling of aneurysms.

CSF management devices

CSF management devices are applied for maintaining intracranial pressure and preventing and treating CSF leaks. Cranial CSF leaks can be evident as rhinorrhea or otorrhea. CSF drainage devices help in reducing intracranial pressure during surgeries and hydrocephalus shunts help to drain excess CSF to another part of the body, such as the abdomen. A CSF shunt consists of two catheters and a one-way valve. The valve regulates the amount, direction of flow, and pressure of the CSF in the ventricles of the brain.

Neurosurgical navigation systems

Neurosurgery navigation systems are used to circumnavigate the brain or the vertebral column during surgeries. Before computed tomography (CT) scan, MRI, intracranial surgery, and PET image are used to understand brain anatomy and reveal the location and extent of the abnormality. Applying these images, a 3D virtual model of the patient’s head is created and anatomical landmarks are recognized. The surgeon can use this 3D model to plan and practice before the actual surgery. Once the surgery is planned, the information about the location is fed into the navigation software by placing sensors on the corresponding regions of the brain. Finally, tumor resections and brain biopsies are performed at a pre-calculated trajectory and depth using navigation probes.
