Global airborne military GPS device market
The airborne segment accounted for around 44% of the global military GPS device market in 2015. Providing real-time positional and navigational information in any airborne vehicle is the primary function of a GPS panel mount device.
“GPS integration has enabled the technology to determine the position with accuracy and affordability. It can be collectively used with inertial navigation systems (INS) to give both bounded long-term accuracy and inertial azimuth, elevation, and roll. The technology also assists during extreme weather operations via military grade SAASM devices,” says Moutushi Saha, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on defense.
GPS technology is being applied increasingly in various military applications and in airborne units, where it helps in providing improved situational awareness during transportation and supervision to the drop zone during the night. In the case of JPADS, GPS guidance receivers help in providing navigation and steering commands to guide the payload to its drop zone. Also, in military free fall techniques, high altitude low opening (HALO) or high altitude high opening (HAHO) GPS retransmission devices are used to provide signals to handheld GPS (DAGR).
Global land-based military GPS device market
Land-based GPS devices like radio and DAGRs are the oldest GPS devices that are used by military officials. Gradually, the technology was implemented on ground vehicles, including both manned and unmanned vehicles that were used in the warfield. Unmanned vehicles depend heavily on GPS-enabled devices because of the absence of driver to command the direction With the deployment of a large number of soldiers across the borders, the need to equip them with tankers, infantry fighting vehicles, and armored personnel carriers is also increasing which will drive the demand for land-based GPS devices. Soldiers use GPS-enabled devices to enhance their situational awareness on the battleground with systems such as Blue Force Tracker, Land Warrior, FalconView, and various electronic mission planning tools loaded on GoBook laptop computers or Toughbook. Tactical radio systems such as the very high frequency (VHF) Combat Net Radio, or Rifleman Radio are no longer just voice data transmitters over terrestrial networks; they also communicate soldiers’ positional information, text messages, and other data via their tactical networks.
Global naval-based military GPS device market
Navies have always been challenged by the risk of route misguidance in large oceans and seas, which has led to the integration of GPS devices in ships, enabling the naval forces to reach regions where they can carry out their strikes. The use of GPS devices in naval warfare is beneficial in surveying coastlines and channels, where there are rare land-based reference points. Changing water depths and underwater dangers are addressed by survey vessels that are fortified with GPS positions and sonar depth soundings, which help in making nautical charts to guide naval forces. Vendors are currently focusing on the manufacturing devices that function underwater and then explode on the surface of the water. They are also investing in systems that will allow GPS to function deeper within the ocean’s surface. The navies continue to be the leaders in research, development, and use of unmanned robotic vehicles.
